How does this end?

2nd place seems to be the precedent.

2015: Oklahoma (#4) is the conference champion, and goes to the CFP semifinal. TCU (#11) is the next-highest ranked Big 12 team, but doesn't get in. Oklahoma State (#16) goes to the Sugar Bowl. OSU and TCU tied for 2nd in the Big 12 at 7-2, but OSU had head-to-head.
Did that change with the change of rules when the CCG was added?

Unfortunately, the sample size is zero because the Sugar was a semifinal last year and OU was in the top 4. So there was no 'automatic' spot for a 2nd Big 12 team.

I don't think the specifics are published anywhere.

Yeah, I've tried searching for them but I've found no actual rules. So this to me feels like it is up to the discretion of the Big 12, and maybe the Bowl as to how or who they select if the Champion is in the Playoff. Which may or may not help us in the long run if that scenario plays out. At this point I dont think anyone knows and there are just too many variables to try to guess.

The SEC spells out their formula clearly:

*If not in CFP Top 4, SEC champ plays in Sugar Bowl
*If SEC champ is in Top 4, the next-highest ranked SEC team plays in Sugar Bowl

They did that because there’s sometimes three or four teams in the West that are better than the best in the East.
