how is it apples and oranges when they played each other...
Sounds like Hawk logic. what does attendance have to do with how good the 2 teams are?
how is it apples and oranges when they played each other...
Refer to Terry Allen's record and performance at KU.
Ok, that's one example of a 1-AA coach who didn't work out. I can counter with one that did pretty well: Jim Tressel.
But, if it's not JP's fault, why does he only get one more chance? Seems like a contradiction in there someplace.
Hlas isn't an ISU fan, that's not his role (he's been my friend for 27 years and I know that he's not an eiu fan, either, although others here disagree).
Personally, I don't believe JP should be blamed for the Chizik folly, one can only know so much about a coaching candidate, and GC seemed to be a good choice. But, rightly or wrongly, a program must be seen to be treading upward. If a tipping point is reached, JP will most likely face an unhappy reality.
I admit it, I'm kinda excited about a new beginning now that we've been forced to begin anew. Hope we make the best of it.
Tressel gets Ohio State. He goes out to recruit and says we are Ohio State and recruits are beating down his door. If we got Farley, he goes out to recruit and says we are Iowa State and recruits say "Who?". Tressel is a good coach but recruiting to OSU is like UNC recruiting in basketball.
So what's his role? Obvioulsy not to make sense.
Basically, the point is that we shouldn't be dismissing a coaching candidate just because their success isn't at the 1-A level.
Terry Allen and Mark Farley are two separate individuals. I don't see the relevance of making such a comparison.
Unless you're saying that no UNI coach, by way of his association with UNI, could ever make it at a Div. IA program. Unless you're saying that no FCS coach can make it at a Div. IA program (see: Tressel). Unless you're saying that Allen and Farley are fraternal twins, and DNA dooms Farley as it doomed Allen at KU.
You saying any of these things? If not, why does Allen's failure dictate that Farley will fail if put in a like situation?
. . . Farley and Allen have none of those things.
That is exactly what I am saying. UNI got beaten like a drum against BYU. You had your chance for proof that he could play against D1 opponents. It wasn't even competitive. If Farley came to ISU it would be the same. It takes contacts and player talent to perform in the B12. Farley and Allen have none of those things.
So what's his role? Obvioulsy not to make sense. Kelly was a decoy? Wrong.
It's typical that he would bring up Dan McCarney. I'm shocked that he didn't refer to him as "ISU's winningest coach", nevermind that he was "ISU's losingest coach", also. In an eerie coincidence my Hawk buddies also share the "You shouldn't have fired McCarney" sentiment. Why? Because he and his program were never a threat to Iowa or to the B12 for that matter. Hawks fans were and are content to lose to ISU and go to a good bowl while we floundered in the B12 and maybe went to a cheesy bowl. Iowa has consistently gotten the best in state recruits and McCarney couldn't change that despite beating Iowa 5 straight times.
Hlas and all other Hawk fans think that ISU somehow doesn't deserve to have a "splash" hire. They think that Iowa deserves success and ISU deserves mediocrity at most (see Dan McCarney). The Chizik situation reiforces this; since we'll never know if Gene would've turned it around Hlas can say "I told you so." I applaud Pollard for rolling the dice on a guy who could've been, dare I say it, ISU's Hayden Fry. Guys like Hlas conveniently forget that Chizik was the top assistant on HC lists for good reason; he was stellar at Auburn and Texas. Yes, the gamble failed but that's not Pollard's fault unless you're like Hlas and Hawkeye Nation who believe that ISU isn't allowed to set high goals or have real success.
The Panthers defeated ISU a year ago; you don't believe UNI would have won this fall had the two teams met again? A case can be made, can't it?
Hmmm. I'm one (of the few here, probably) who'd like to see what Farley could do in Ames. He knows the game, he's Iowan, his unpolished quality right now for me is pretty darn attractive. I'm thinkin' just give us a guy who is first and foremost a football coach.
To be provocative. Given your response to his column, mission accomplished.
