I'm travelling next week and won't have access to a cooking supplies. Any suggestions on how to stay away from junk?

Target grilled stuff. Don't do fast food or fried foods. Generally baked or grilled things are common to find on menus. Assuming you eat out. You can find healthy places to eat.

I saw you're doing intermittent fasting. I don't know much about it but I would guess it's a fairly strict schedule to adhere to. Do your best to stick with it, and avoid eating after 8 pm. Drink plenty of water. Avoid the vending machines; nothing but garbage in there.

Man, I so wanted to post that comment as soon as I saw it this morning, but held back. Gotta keep my man's spirits up!

In that vein...

Yeah, I debated a long time. But he asked us to engage and flame away or something to that effect.

I hadn't posted it yet, but I used to be one of those guys everyone hated. I ate everything and lots of it and never gained a pound. I was very active, but it didn't seem to matter what I ate. Of course I hit my mid 40's and that all changed. I was about 20 pounds over my target weight and I found I had to do something about it now rather than wait until the problem gets out of control. It probably doesn't help that I have been busier with my kid's sports and other activities so the bike has been mostly collecting dust in the garage. I have started running with the boy, but there is still a lot of work to do. I am down 3 pounds or so - that's a start.

Hey Fanatics,

So this is it. Tomorrow is the big day. I talked to my doctor and he is thrilled to hear that I am changing my ways. I signed up for the local gym and I’m ready to kick some a**! I’m super excited that you guys are joining me.

It took me about a week to reflect and I’ve realized that this journey is more than just losing weight, looking good and feeling good. I am 26. I am engaged. Health history in my family has been far from perfect and I have never seen my parent’s in good physical shape. It was always a worry if Dad would have a heart attack. My mom’s mobility is very limited now due to arthritis in her legs and the weight she puts on them.

I repeat, I am 26.

I LOVE my parents. They are the reason I was able to go to Iowa State and the reason why I am who I am today. But, I do not want to become them. I hope that this experience will encourage a change for them, but in the end, I’m doing this for me.

No matter how any of us got to where we are today, just remember, it’s not the start, it’s the finish.

Ok, enough of me rambling. I’m planning to do intermittent fasting and with a keto-diet. I’ll send you guys a picture of the scale tomorrow morning! Good Luck Everyone!

Good luck with your new commitment!

I recently began my own health and fitness journey in June after recent heart-related scares to my dad and father-in-law.

Kudos to the new gym membership. Do you know if group fitness classes are available?

My quick 2¢, give yoga a try. It's easy on the joints, really emphasizes your "personal practice (low pressure & mental peace)" and can be a great gateway to other more intensive cardio or weight training oriented classes like spin, HIIT or TRX - all of which I now regularly attend, but would have been far too intimidated to have started with. I used to swim 10-20 laps a few times a week on my own, but since incorporating workout classes to my regimen, I've realized how much harder it is to push myself beyond my comfort zone alone versus with an instructor - much less immersed in the positive energy of other like-minded classmates all on their own health and wellness journeys too!

Admittedly I've only lost ~10lbs thus far, so I'm sure I could probably be more regimented in my approach relative to some of the other stories that have been shared on here, but I can definitely feel a major improvement in my flexibility/energy level (especially when playing with or picking up after my 2 yr-old daughter).

I've also noticed that working out 3 or more times per week has a dramatic influence on my dietary tendencies:

< 3 times = I'm much more likely to treat it as if I've earned credits to eat even more poorly than normal (grabbing fast food on the way home).

> 3 times = I'm much more likely to be conscious of not "undoing" my efforts in the gym (driving straight home to cook).

End rant/.

In the meantime, I'll be following this thread and virtually sending as much positivity as my bandwidth allows. Cheers!

Lastly, here's some video inspiration a friend shared with me recently. Hopefully enough to get you excited and give yoga a chance...

I've been there. It just hit me in my late twenties versus forties. Maybe just my personality but when I exercise I have to go all in. Trying to maintain 2-3 days a week is a recipe for failure. I've found that getting up an hour early every weekday and exercising is the most sustainable routine for me.

Also running is super boring and repetitive, which means I spend 20+ minutes focusing on my pain and discomfort. It's the worst. That's why I like programs like Insanity and T25. I recommend the latter for parents with a busy schedule.

I wish I exercised more in the morning...it's a great way to start a day.

Oddly running is my way of getting a good quick work out, vs. a 5 mile walk or biking 20 miles which takes 1.5-2 hours.

My son has decided he is going to be a runner since he no longer is playing soccer. He will go out for cross country next year when he is old enough. This way I can help him get ready and get myself back in shape. I also play BB Sunday nights with a bunch of dads when I don't have a conflict.

I didn't start running until post-athletic 'career' and found it refreshing. The best is you can go on a walk or run pretty much anywhere. I generally always bring running clothes/shoes on vacations etc. and try to get a few runs in.

Basically it's OK to bring a healthy lifestyle with you even if it's a break from everything else.

Just a drive by post to tell you guys to go hit the gym today. ;) Ain't no excuses because there are NO decent football games on today. None. Not a hypocrite, the old man is heading over there to.

Knocked out my sixty minute body sculpt class this morning. Makes me feel a little less guilty about all my bad weekend eating and drinking habits.

someone tried to give me a suggestion on how to solve me never being full problem, and i thank you for that suggestion, of eating slower, but, that did not solve the issue. But along the same lines, what has helped tremendously, was drinking a gulp of water between every bite, which in a backdoor sort of way was the suggestion.

Drinking water prior to eating is also supposed to be a way to feel fuller and eat less....I'm gonna start trying this especially at night.

Raced a 10k today and placed in my age group, thanks very much. RRCA state championship with plenty of Kenyans running (winner ran in the 29s).
