With regard to redshirts for Meeks and Moreno. If KJ is truly on the hot seat as most seem to think, I would fully expect any true freshman who is significantly better than the next option at his weight to wrestle this year. If I was in KJ's shoes, I'd do it.

I'd rather have a pair of finalists in 2017 than a pair of decent true freshman in 2012/13. With Meeks I understand it more - without Meeks there we are basically forfeiting at 133. But Mayfield is a serviceable 149 pounder so I'd rather take our lumps there and let Moreno develop.

At this point I think Meeks and G Moreno need to stay under redshirt. Take both to all the opens and Midlands, then judge whether one, both, or neither stays redshirted

You youngsters have no idea how far ISU wrestling has fallen. I feel for those ISU kids....

I would take a grain of salt with anything he says. I'm kinda down on the program right now, but what he said is just hyperbole.

Really? How many of ISU's wins yesterday were against non Division 1 wrestlers? Most of them. It's not hyperbole if it's true. And it only pisses you off because it is true. Look at the picture of the ISU coaches on Cyclones.com. That's the most upbeat positive picture ISU's own sports information department could find of the staff and they all look like their dogs just got hit by a combine.

who is going to move down to 165 and challenge moreno? can moreno beat either one? at least we have some good competition at a few weights unlike the last 3 years. i think for Iowa State and for Meeks long term he needs to redshirt. same with Moreno. we are not going to be world beaters again this year, with or without those 2, i say take our lumps again and start to really make an actual push next year.

is eric thompson never going to come back to ames? he won hwt yesterday...

It's an early season tune up tournament where most of the programs in attendance aren't D-1. So of course most of our wins were against non D-1 wrestlers, so were most of our matches. Why would that **** anyone off? If we were at Midlands (where there are lots of D-1 programs entered) and only winning against non D-1 that would be something to be concerned about.

Right now our basketball team has only beat up on lower level talent as well. I don't think anybody is ****** off at that. Nor should they be.

I would too, but my point is if your the coach and your job's on the line, you have a couple of freshman that could make your team enough stronger to maybe save you job, you might not care about how they'd do after your gone.

What was Iowa State's match record Saturday against the Division 1 competition that was there yesterday?

The basketball team isn't playing junior colleges and NAIA schools (and pretending it's real varsity competition). If Iowa State can't get any better competition to come to its open, it should drop it. It's a disgrace to Coach Nichols as it is.

Harold Nichols Open is intended to bring the top LOCAL talent to Ames whatever it is D1, Juco, or D2. It is a test for starters and freshman to see where they are at.

I just don't want them to waste John Meeks freshman season in favor a one extra win for a mediocre team. If Meeks is already doing well this year just think what he could do next year as a red shirt freshman and probably a much better team as a whole. Does anybody disagree with me that Jackson and Nickerson need at least one more year to fully develop his team?

Give Meeks some credit. He went toe-to-toe with the 4th ranked guy in the country, for heavens sake. Lots of good recruits do not red shirt so why should Meeks. Personally, I think it is up to him, whether to redshirt or not, but I sure do not think it is a bad move to have him on the roster this year.

Michigan is wrestling Massa and Thomas as true freshman and not sure if Bruno is a true frosh or not and he is wrestling also. Where will Michigan be in the Big 10 this year?

If a wrestler is competitive, then why not have him wrestle? Is it mostly for the prospect of the wrestler having the best senior year possible? Or is it more that the wrestler will be damaged in some way by wrestling too early (whatever that means?)

I'm more of a casual fan, but it seems that one's opinion of of red-shirting Meeks is influenced too much by one's opinion of KJ. Unless it's unhealthy for Meeks to be wrestling, then I want to see him on the mat.

Welcome Clonedad! I personally didn't think we looked bad as alot of people are stating. Gibson and Finch had 1 bad match and dominated their other matches. Meeks battled #4 real close and I think earned the win. Boaz didn't wrestle, so our 184 pounder we didn't get to see.

As far as the future, I'm excited to have Weatherspoon, Esaias, Larson and others on the team.

Intensity and being ready for every match needs to improve. I didn't think many (if any) gassed. I thought the team looked stronger.
