I have to go pickup all the **** that's laying around outside to make sure a baseball bat that wasn't put away doesn't fly thru a window.
This. Securing deck items is a priority if we are expecting strong winds. After that, it's probably chill in the basement where I was probably already at.

In Johnston and Urbandale they set off the sirens if it's over 20 mph wind or something stupid. So I ignore them now.

Will take the kids to the basement if it's an actual tornado warning. I like watching storms but the derecho dropped a tree really close to our house.

I'm usually pretty calm during storms. Figure someone in the house needs to have a calm demeanor so the rest of the family does not panic. Usually won't move to the basement unless things get to the point that we need to.

Funny thing, my 7 year old was going to bed when it was lightning out this week and I just told her the thunder are just the angels bowling. She says "then what is the big flash for?" I said they are just taking pictures of the fun they are having. She says "that makes sense, there are a lot of angels so they probably have to take a lot of pictures!" Gotta love the things kids say!

I was in the office in 2020 when the derecho hit. Watched it roll through from the 4th floor windows not realizing what was happening at the time. I remember I went to the lobby later after it passed and they were moping up water as apparently it blew in so hard it was coming in from the revolving door.

Daytime I ill go out and watch. Nighttime, once it gets dicey I will head to basement and watch TV in relative safety. If it gets REAL bad, will gather up the pets and bring them downstairs as well.

The gf (and one of the cats) however, were traumatized by the derecho, and both will head downstairs and get nervy once we get to "heavy rain" level. In fairness, they could have been seriously injured when the tree hit the house, and she came upstairs to water coming through the ceiling in multiple places and the porch destroyed.

Right? Unless there's a tornado, then they wait until it's been on the ground for seven minutes first.

It's a Polk county issue when this happens as we have it happen a lot in Grimes too. Last year on night at like 3am the sirens went off when there was not a cloud in the sky and no wind. Never heard the sirens so loud since usually they go off when it is windy or storming and not when it is calm and quiet so scared the crap out of me initially. They never did say why they went off other than they were investigating it and thought it was likely a malfunction. My guess is maybe someone setup a scheduled test and plugged the wrong date and time into the system.

I saw some meme the other day about someone from another state cowering inside under a bed during a tornado and Iowans running at it with a camera.

What is your storm personality? During a big storm a few years ago, I was at work, and another friend and I just stood in the vestibule and watched. If it was going to kill us, it wouldn’t really matter if I was there or downstairs where there was still a bunch of glass.

Do you hunker down with radios and water bottles? Do you storm chase with a camera? Do you have multiple TVs on different storm channels like it is March Madness?

I’m fine if I’m at home. I think I’ve gone to the basement once or twice.

I don’t like driving in heavy rain though…in college I once drove through an area during a flash flood at night. I am not sure how deep I drove through but when the lightening flashed it was roaring over the road and I turned around.

I've been in two tornadoes, one that passed directly over the restaurant we were in, taking out all the windows in my car parked outside, and one that went directly over our house and sucked the basement door out of my hand before I was able to grab it and shut it as we were going downstairs.

For the most part, I am in the ignore camp. However, I was once in the chase camp and took photos of tornadoes and tornado damage. If it gets particularly loud, I will take a peek outside to see what's going on. At work, they always demanded we go stand in the stairwell during storm events. I, however, just kept on working.
