Friday OT: Deep thoughts

This doesn't qualify as "deep," but it creeps back to me from time to time. RS interview with Elvis Costello, from sometime in the '80s. As closely as I can recall the direct quote.

"Americans do not understand leisure. They understand work. They understand play. They do not understand leisure."

(He might have said "you" instead of "they," can't remember for sure).

When I first read that, back maybe in early '90s, it didn't fully resonate. The longer I live, the more sense it makes (even if I still can't "definitively define" it).

Was she told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure?
Did she understand it when they said -
That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure?
Will she still believe it when he's dead?
Ah, girl...
