I've had to do several radio spots and one TV spot this year. My kids have had several times they were featured in ads, and once were simultaneously on the front of the DM Register and the Ames Trib. All just because of groups with which we're affiliated, so it's not like it's impressive at all. My husband used to be a radio DJ in high school and college. All of this is just little regional Iowa stuff that doesn't matter, but our kids are always PUMPED because they think it's amazing.

What are YOUR brushes with the media? Have you been interviewed for a magazine? Have you been the subject of a meme? Caught on the jumbo at a basketball game?

In my former professional life, I was a newspaper reporter/editor. I worked the 2008 election cycle, which means I got to interview a lot of the candidates making their way through Iowa, including the dude who was elected president that year.

I've been on the jumbotron a lot during Iowa Wild games because I sit in the rowdy section (aka the BEST section).

NEVER FORGET (everyone, remember this wasn't too long after Randy blew out a knee at Hilton):
Pandy Reterson tripped on the stair from the oyster bar into main bar at Silky O Sullivan’s at about 11 last night. I kind of reached out to make sure he didn’t take a header but he caught himself for the most part.
Me “God damn it Randy, don’t blow out anoth.....”
Randy “I know, I know.”

Husband and I were on kiss cam at Royals game. So few people there, we were probably only couple they could find.

Two of my kids were interviewed as toddlers at different events in downtown Des Moines by KCCI.

I was interviewed by Newsweek when the Pope came to Living History Farms.

I chatted informally with Tom Brokaw at Raygun during caucus season one year.

I was a director for a nonprofit community organization for a few years. I did newspaper, radio and TV interviews, plus recorded a radio ad for an event.

When I was in x-ray school, a picture of a classmate and I made the front page of the brochure for the program (and on the college website).

Great timing for this one. Last Saturday comedian Jim Jefferies was in Des Moines and I bought a ticket that was part of a VIP section that got to be apart of a meet and greet after the show.

After the show they explained that we were to get in line you get a picture with him with your phone. I thought it would be a quick photo and move along but the theater officials allowed a few minutes for everyone to get to say something too.

I got to the back of line for chance to get more time. While the line moved I rushed through everything I wanted to say because Jim is right there with my favorite comedians. Everything went great as I think I said everything I wanted to say and didn't come off too much like a fanboy.

Me and this other gal in high school got selected to make a 'don't drink and drive' commercial during prom season (I think).

During the kiss cam at a game I attended, they showed one particular guy and girl, but they didn't kiss. They waited a couple of seconds, but they still didn't kiss. Well the camera operator pans over just a little bit to show the same guy but a different girl. The new 'couple' still didn't kiss.

When I was a kid we were playing neighborhood football, and a local newspaper reporter stopped and took some shots, got our names and ran a short last page thing.

My other brush was going into the men's room at Denver Stapleton airport, as Frank Gorshin (the original Riddler) was coming out. And no, I did not speak to him.

Thought you were going to say you heard someone tapping their foot in the stall next to you.

Made it on the Kiss cam at a Minnesota Twins game.
In 1991, I was on camera by NBC for waiting at the airport for the Minnesota North Stars to come off their plane after beating Edmonton to get to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Frank was the perfect guy to play Riddler.

I worked on some environmental education projects when I was in high school, and ended up getting 3 elementary school's worth of 5th graders down to the local park to learn about stream health and ecology.
Found the newspaper clippings that my mom saved when I was cleaning out her house during the summer of 2020.
