I like Frank. The Twitter talk is interesting. You do see how these guys are as people off the court.

He's very passionate. Not really different than CPR.

The way he shows is passion isn't really different than CPR's, but I would be careful saying he is a lot like him. I don't how often I have seen CPR say in a press conference that the coaches did their homework, we did everything we were supposed to do. The players didn't show up.

I might be wrong. But, CPR has always been lauded as getting the most out of his players. That doesn't seem to be what Frank Martin is saying here.

This I agree with. Always good to have a coach with a lot of personality in the conference.

Fred is a big shift for me after finding so much to like about Johny Orr, Tim Floyd, and Larry Eustachy. Fred is more "Midwestern" if you will, but I really, really like the quiet confidence. That and he's probably the sharpest tack we've ever had as a basketball coach.

I think Fred actually has a lot of personality, he's just such a cool customer that it kind of slips by people. Everytime I listen to a post-game or interview with him he says at least one off-the-cuff thing that makes me laugh.

Frank Martin's Take

For whatever reason, I think Frank Martin is a really interesting character and is not the initial persona that I had created in my mind over the last few years.

Stolen from the DMReg sidebar on Royce winning Big XII Rookie of the Week:

K-STATE COACH BLASTS HIS TEAM
As you might expect, Kansas State coach Frank Martin had a different take on the game and it had nothing to do with NCAA Tournament bids.

“You have to give Christopherson credit,†he said, “but that is not what cost us the game. What cost us the game is selfishness, immaturity and nonsense for the past two days.â€

Paging Patrick Knight.

“It’s embarrassing, our inability to focus,†Martin continued before detouring to the Twitter-fest his team had after winning at Missouri.

“Some of our guys were putting stuff on Twitter before we got on the bus. It is just a bunch of nonsense.

“How is that focusing on your team and what’s important? It is a shame that this
team refuses to embrace success.â€

Sounds like our idea that Purple KS might have trouble focusing after their two big wins came to fruition -- at least in Frank's view. As many people have said, "You're never as good or as bad as you think you are."

I bet he now has their attention for the next two weeks. Here's hoping we get Baylor next Saturday, take the #3 seed and play UT On March 9.

Have loved Martin since he came into the league and I watched them physically manhandle us at Hilton his first year. Like others have said though, seeing him in that purple tux was scarier than He who must not be Named

Yes, definetly a dry sense of humor.

It might have been focus or the fact that we are a better team. I'll go with the latter.

Or both. We looked supremely focused at times on Saturday. I think we are the better team. If K-State is easily distracted that could be why we're better.

I started to appreciate Martin after K-State got eliminated last year and the reporters were being a little tough on on of the Seniors (his name escapes me but others might remember the occurrence). Martin basically **** on the reporter to the effect of "Did you get what you wanted?"

Good guy. Cares about his players, team, school. Passionate and honest and as mentioned by other even funny sometimes. I would LOVE to see a reality show with all the Big 12 coaches.

So many characters.

Way up there
Re: Frank Martin's Take

I think the "hangover" effect had an impact, but the fact that Kstate came in pretty high on themselves and expected us to lay down may have been more the case. IMO Martin is purposely blowing the whole social media thing out of proportion to humble his team in order to get their attention. I think his comments are complimentary of us, he's basically trying to drive home to his team that this time of year there are no easy wins, if you don't have your head screwed on right teams like us will make you pay.

I agree. In fairness to KSU, we caught them at a great time. They were fresh off of a very difficult 4-game stretch, and they had 2 huge wins immediately before us.

It's very difficult to win games when you're playing a gauntlet like that. That is why conference/NCAA tournaments are so difficult, even for top teams. You're playing several very tough teams back-to-back-to-back.

I was about to mention this episode myself, and the player you are thinking of is Jacob Pullen, who was pretty much in tears during the press conference.

Martin is also one of my favorite coaches in the conference. I remember after we beat them in the Octagon a couple of seasons ago in McD's only real big conference win he said something along the lines of while he was disappointed in his own team he was also happy for McD and Iowa State since it had been such a tough year with Lucca leaving mid-season, injuries, etc. I thought that was a really classy thing to say from him after a tough loss that might have cost them a #1 seed.

He made a lot of points in my book with that exchange. He's an extremely animated character, but the guy can coach and his players seem to like him a lot....that or they're afraid to act like they don't.

I go back and forth about him. I worked at KSU and met him several times. He is very nice/sincere and really cares and appreciates his opportunity (when he was hired, no one was excited). He also has been very good to Hoiberg in terms of welcoming him, etc.

I like the honesty and like another poster said, calling the media out when they took a somewhat low blow to his seniors. BUT, I will say, I sat two rows behind the bench last year when they played here...I wouldn't know how to explain his behavior to a kid. The language I could hear clear as day was embarassing. I get coaches use a variety of ways to get to players, communicate, etc, but it was over the top. I cannot imagine what it is like behind closed doors (although, I've heard some stories from student athletes at KSU). I guess what got me was there was one time when an assistant stepped out of his chair to meet a player coming off the court and he grabbed the assistant and screamed "sit your f****** a** back down." That was to his assistant!

On a side note,I went to a coaches talk last year and asked CFH if he agreed he was basically the opposite of Frank Martin in terms of demeanor and he laughed it off and said how nice Frank is.

Well that whole story sounds like Larry Eustachey De Ja Vu.

I think I'll keep who we got and KSU can keep Frank.
