This is the program I started about 6 months ago. It is a great beginner program that will build you a lot of mass quick. It is pretty intense though, so not for the girly men.

Since you have admitted that your wife picked out the clothes you were to wear for your engagement pictures, I think you no longer have the authoritah to judge whether or not the rest of us are girly men...

Re: Rippetoe's program

I just stumbled across something interesting--Mark Rippetoe (the author of Starting Strength and of the program brianhos posted above) actually owns/runs CrossFit Wichita Falls.

CrossFit Wichita Falls

Small world.

Anything Ripp says take as gospel. That guy has forgotten more about strength than any of us will ever know. His book is one the most detailed things I have ever read.

Yeah pullups kill me as well. My legs have always been strong from track and bball, but my upper body needs some work.

I was a lifter for years until

my joints hurt too bad. Took a few years off and have recently started a Super Slow routine that I love. Quick - 15 minute workouts twice a week - hitting all major muscle groups and many smaller. Every set to failure and failure means 5-10 seconds of quivering collapse. I will never have a 300+ pound bench again, but my overall fitness (strength, endurance, flexibility) is greatly improved and its easy on the joints since there are no ballistic movements. Do a search on super slow workouts for a taste.

Unless you are under 25, I suggest you do not do the program Iowa State is using. They make the players lift 100 - 110% of their max, which is good if you have testoterone flowing like the Mississippi. If not, you may find yourself being seriously injured. My high school actually uses the BFS program.

I'm only 23 and luckily my testosterone is flowing like the Nile River. So i'm good in that department. The BFS program is alright but I'd much rather do a college lifting program. Any idea of what ISU does?

What would you suggest liftingwise for increased flexibility in the shoulders area? My shoulders are frozen to the point I can't get my my hands above my head, and can no longer swing a golf club without some pretty good pain. I can't even grip the bar with both hands to do a lat pull down.

That would depend on what caused the problem.

I've been told, by doctors, etc, that I would be crippled for life, at 4 different times in my life. Each time, I either exercised the affected area into usefulness, or ignored that area and learned to compensate.

A wrapup: Age 5 - strapped to a bed for 6 months in order to combat Kidney Disorder - feet grew "turned out" Doc said "you'll be lucky to ever walk, you'll never run.

Age 13 - had left leg partially removed in accident - reattached

Age 17 - Broke back while working horses - Vertebrate impinges directly on Sciatic nerve

Age 34 - Head on car accident at near highway speeds - closed head injury resulting in chronic vertigo, and near complete loss of the use and control of the left leg.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Of course, if you're in Stephen Hawking's condition, you do the best you can without your body; otherwise, you ruck up and drive on. Or just give up.

Last Saturday, my semi-functional left leg collapsed on me during a 10K in the mountains. I sprained my ankle and slid downhill, face first. My response? I knew I had a good 3 or 4 miles in me before my ankle was non-useable, so I ran that much more before returning to my house. (And a large amount of good German beer and ice) By Monday, the swelling was down enough to do 55 minutes on the elliptical, and I did 60 today, in addition to my weight workout. I plan on running that same route Saturday and completing it, dammit.

One thing I noticed; the more I exercize my muscles, at age 40 and beyond, the more testosterone I appear to have. I took a few years off from weights after the car accident, and my voice became higher and my body shape changed significantly (duh!) Since going back on weights, my voice has dropped from a Tenor II to a Baritone I, and I am noticing other indications of increased testosterone (none of yer bidness!)

Do a search on Matt Furey - former Iowa wrestler. He has a gimic called Combat Conditioning and sells the hell out of it. I did it for a while and it felt great, but I did so many hindu push-ups (gopher-getters) that I developed tendonitis in my elbow.

The important thing about programs is to just do something... and take great supplements.....
