Iowa State is #7

http://www.flowrestling.org/ranking/1108-2016-recruiting-class-rankings

[h=3]7. Iowa State Cyclones[/h]5 Year Cycle: NR, #11, #10, NR, NR
Ranked Recruits:
#23-Sammy Colbray, OR (184/197)
#32-Kanen Storr, MI (141/149)
#50-Ian Parker, MI (133)
#67-Gannon Gremmel, IA (285)

Others: Gavin DeWitt, MO (133); Zemua Baptista, NE (149/157); Trey Meyer, WA (174)

In Ames: The Cyclones haven’t been at the level of their glory days, but they haven’t been as far off as some might think, either. Iowa State has finished between 11th and 14th the last four years, often with a patchwork line-up. That’s not too shabby. There should be optimism that, with a couple good classes, like this one, Top 10 days become the norm again.

Why They’re Here: This group represents a great upgrade to the talent in the room. All four ranked guys have very legitimate shots at starting early and should be staples in the line-up. They’ve all wrestled national schedules with great success. It was particularly important to land Gremmel. Finding a HWT is no small feat. He should take the burden off that spot for years.

Why They’re Not Higher: You could make a case that the Cyclone group is more balanced with prospects ranging from #23 and topping out at #67 as opposed to Purdue’s #99. But two things made me lean to the Boilers: 1) the star potential for Parriott and 2) clearer paths to start. Although he has the talent to win the spot, Parker will face hurdles including their star recruit from last year, Pupp Simmons.

Needs for Next Year: Currently 14th on the Junior Big Board, Austin Gomez is committed to ISU for 2017. With him, Parker and Pupp, the Cyclones should be set down low. I’d watch for KJ and staff to target 165-184.

Flashback Stat: The Cyclones’ Class of 2010 that was ranked 6th had big hitters Kyven Gadsen and Mike Moreno, but missed on Ryak Finch and Joey Cozart.

Pretty exciting stuff. Top 7 recruiting class with a great start on next year's already with Gomez. Might just be the momentum we need to get back toward the top again.

Will be interesting to see how the bottom weights shake out. Seems logjammed, but with weight changes and all it always seems to work itself out.

This is our best class in a long time. Hopefully it is what we need to get back into title contention.

It will be interesting to see what Pat Pop does with the #1 class at NC State. He's got a pretty solid track record of doing more with less.. but now he will have some elite talent.

We also got Ryan Leisure in Gomez class. Nice start to back to back good classes.

For some reason I was thinking he was a 2016, now it makes sense why he wasn't in Flo's recruiting ranking article. I think he'll be a top-20 kid nationally at his weight next year. Very good start on the '17 class.

Just took out Nick Piccinnini at UWW juniors, 17 to 10. Piccinnini will be Oklahoma State's starter at 125 next year.

Gomez is #14 in the junior prospect rankings right now. To me it looks like he has a ton of room to physically develop, too.

EDIT: whoops, didn't read close enough and thought you were talking about Gomez being top 20 overall.

I really like this group but seeing 7th is a little sobering. That said, it's just an opinion. Here's to the development of these kids.

Iowa is starting to crank things up out of state. That should leave some pretty good instate talent for us. Not a recipe for wining a title but it could really help us step up as a program--mixing in our own out of state talent like Gomez of course.

Wasn't he committed to Grand Canyon until they dropped wrestling? Curious why a kid that good would want to go somewhere like that. Either way I'm definitely happy that their loss is our gain!

Close to home. Plus note he was at 113 as a senior in HS. Seniors that small don't generally get big offers from the big boys.

I don't care about that. This is a fantastic addition.

Was told he walks around close to 130, if true 125 will be about perfect in a couple years

Just a really really big development getting Vega here. He's a legit stud AND fills a need. Coaching staff just knocked it out of the park with this one.

Im usually nervous with those at 113 coming in, but with our last 3-4 125 recruits having weight problems, I like getting a currently lighter one. Make sure you have the weight filled and not sucking down too hard and gassing completely.

I'm with you. 113 pounds as a SR in HS is small. Personally, I think cutting from 135ish to 125 is how one contends at that weight. That said, Vega has a hell of a resume.

I usually agree 100%, but like you said, the guys we've gotten around the 125 weight in HS (Boston, Simmons, Gomez) have all outgrown the weight quickly. Vega looks like he has the type of frame to grow into the 125 weight class pretty well.
