Anybody remember the Hoiberg recruiting battle? Was he Iowa State's to lose?

I seem to remember Lute from Arizona coming after Freddy really hard; I know he wanted him bad, but did Johnny have Fred locked?

I'm sure he had multiple offers; did he take a lot of visits?

I cannot say what was going on inside the Hoiberg household or Fred's head, but it wasn't commonly thought of as a lock. There were a lot in Lincoln that thought he would go there whether he decided to play football or basketball. Whether or not there was any chance of Fred picking kNU for Basketball might be questionable.

I think in the end Iowa State was in his blood. He was ball boy for Iowa State growing up, I believe.

Lute wanted him bad at Arizona. I heard at the time Fred's mom was in favor of him getting out of the local spotlight and play without that pressure, but I have no documentation to support that

I think Arizona, Stanford, and ISU were his final three. I have heard him say that he had the 'Zona L.O.I. on his kitchen table ready to sign, but at the end he thought of all the people who supported him in Ames growing up and decided to stay.

I remember that too. I seem to remember it was a real nail-biter with Arizona, and down to the last day or so when he declared.

Didn't he hold a press conference and invite all of Ames and ISU to come watch? And then go elsewhere?

Oh wait, I'm confused :jimlad:

His parents wanted him to go to Stanford because of the academics.

He chose Iowa State because his girlfriend, now wife, was attending Iowa State.

If I remember the legend correctly, Orr sealed the deal with Hoiberg when he traveled through a blizzard, up hill both ways, on old wooden snow shoes, with no walking stick, to go see a HS game, a trip even Hoiberg's parents opted to avoid.

No, you're remembering it wrong. He had a big televised press conference, with hats from various schools on the table in front of him. He picked up the Arizona hat, held it over his head, then put it down and put on the Iowa State cap. We were all, like, "You so cool, Fred! That fake out was so gangsta!"

Seriously, I hate how high school kids do this nowadays. Enough with the cap press conference thing already. Get off my lawn!
