First concert was John Denver - with my mom - which was actually pretty good for country.

First big concert was Queen North America Bites the Dust tour 1980 at Hilton. One of the coldest September nights ever!
The band started off with Jail House Rock and the fast version of We Will Rock You after which Freddie Mercury said: "Hello Ames, Iowa...Home of the Cyclones!" and the crowd went nuts!

First concert was Billy Joel at Hilton in the mid 80s when I was about a sophomore in high school.

Enjoyed Dave Matthews at Principal Park, Van Halen (with Sammy Hagar) at Hilton in early 90s, and U2 at Jack Trice. Memorable time at Mojo Nixon and the Dead Milkman someplace by DePaul in Chicago (got hit on by a chick with a shaved head).

And, because I know you will all be jealous, I saw Milli Vanilli, En Vogue and Young MC at Vets....don't judge me.

Sit down, folks. My first concert was Paul Revere and the Raiders at the KRNT Theater in Des Moines.

We've all got some skeletons in our closets. This should be a separate thread -- most embarrassing concert.

First small concert: Goldfinger @ Cunningham's Journal, Kearney NE, 1999
First big concert: Aerosmith @ Omaha Civic, 1999

Top 3 shows:
Flaming Lips and the White Stripes @ Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, New Years Eve 2003/4
Dave Matthews (w/guest Neil Young)/Ben Harper @ Hilton Coliseum, Ames, 2003
My Morning Jacket @ Red Rocks (night 2), 2013

I was at that MMJ show! I was right by the sound board. I had to leave at 1:00 AM. They might still be playing for all I know.

Mine would be 311 in Des Moines when I was 14. Still one of the best live bands I've ever seen.

I saw Bob Dylan in Omaha in the early 80's during his Christian period.
People in the crowd kept yelling "Dylan! Rock-n-roll".
Dylan kept telling the people leaving "Go ahead, there's someone waiting for you out there!"
I asked the guy I was with who was waiting outside.
Guy said, "The devil!"

Oh.

Not my first concert, nor last, but definitely the most enlightening...

Chicago at the Iowa State Fair. Either 1974 or 1975. Last night of the fair. Good show, but at the end/encore the skies let loose. Being my first concert I really didn't know that encores were normal, so we left at the end of the regular concert and beat getting soaked to the bones.

Best concert may have been Elvis Costello at the DSM Civic Center in support of his Imperial Bedroom album (1983?). Truly amazing and the crowd was into it. He even commented a few days later on his Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder interview how outstanding the Des Moines audience was.

Second would be Paul McCartney in Chicago 2002 (seen him 8 times, including at the Royal Albert Hall) but this was somehow the best. Tributes to John, then George, then Linda was especially moving.

First concert: Sammy Hagar at the Civic Center in DSM. I think that was the Three Lock Box tour.

I lived in one of the duplexes on Beach across from the stadium for pretty much the entire JTS concert series. I lived Living Colour with the Stones, and Pink Floyd was awesome, but U2 in JTS is still my favorite of that series. Funny how this brought back a flood of memories from the old concert days at ISU. Bruce Springsteen, Mötley, Badlands, Tesla, UB40, Prince. Damn there were some great ones.

Only big name show I've been to is Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan in Cedar Falls 2 years ago. I've seen a bunch of other smaller country bands though, including the Eli Young Band before they went big.

I guess my first "concert" would have been one of the VEISHEA ones in '06. In high school I was into hardcore music and all of those were relatively small "shows".

Two best concerts I've seen are OAR in Cedar Falls and Zach Brown at the Well.

Where they love the governor
Not sure on my first, as we had a yearly 4th of July festival in my hometown that drew classic rock bands as well as new country bands.

Best: Eric Clapton at The Mark
Close 2nd: The Eagles at The Mark
Tie for Close 2nd: Peter Frampton, outdoor concert at Riverboat Days

Jason Boland always gives a good show, and Reckless Kelly is pretty good live as well.

This topic got started on another forum I use and I found it pretty interesting to hear whose all seen what and where.

I'll start...

Tool-Cedar Rapids,IA
Freshman year of high school and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. They had people in full body paint swinging upside down from the ceiling. Extremely trippy but to this day it ranks right up there for me.

1st one 1976 REO Speedwagon. Omaha Civic Auditorium. They played to the side because that was all that bought tickets. Did I see them coming or what?

My favorite--The Who about 1980? in Hilton Coliseum.

Head East and Pure Prairie League in Harlan (yes Harlan, Iowa) 1979 was a close 2nd.

Saw Dylan at the state fair... Worse concert I've ever been to and I've been to a lot.

I was also at that Weezer concert. If I remember right that was right when Say it aint so had just came out. Good times!

I was there, too. That was actually when Maladroit came out - so Dope Nose was the big hit at the time.

My first ever concert was when I was in grade school, bio dad took me to Bon Jovi/Cinderella at the Iowa Jam. That was an interesting parenting decision on his part, and Cinderella were way better performers than Bon Jovi.

Hmm, best concerts:

- Bob Dylan
- Rilo Kiley at First Ave
- System of a Down, met them and a bunch of other artists in Wisconsin when working for a music store

Two of the more interesting concerts:

- Bloodhound Gang at... Supertoad (?) on the "Hooray for Boobies" tour, Nerf Herder opened
- went to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl block party in 1997 in high school - The Monkees were bizarre (no Mike Nesmith), and the Goo Goo Dolls played at midnight as a giant tortilla chip dropped into a bowl of salsa
