Firing Rhoads Question

Rhoads' buyout is a lump sum of $750,000 per season remaining on his contract plus $300,000 payable in 2018. So if he were fired at the end of this season, we'd need to cut him a check for $4.5 million. I think that would put some strain on what is the 10th-largest athletic budget in the Big 12 without significant donor support.

I don't think money will be an issue with this. Especially if we end the season with 2 wins. The longer the program sits in the sewer, the harder it is going to be to pull it back out again. The cost of lost ticket sales and fan excitement over the next decade is what's at stake, not just next year. At this point, there is no way you keep Rhoads, unless you are just willing to pack in the football program and call it a day.

I know 4.5 million is a lot of money, but you can always look at it as that's probably what we'd have had to pay Hoiberg this year if he'd have stayed. The money is out there if we need it. And this is one of those situations where you break the piggy bank. Because to continue down this path will be very bad for the future of ISU football and the whole department in general.

If I were a big donor....I'd rather donate money and have my name on something...you don't get the credit if you pay for a buyout. "Here is our new coach, brought to you by the Sukup family former coach buyout"

So basically we'd have to write a check for $4.8 million, since his contract is until Dec 31 2021.

Here's something for you all the think about that I have not seen mentioned on here. It is from a source that I will keep annonymous (since this is now the cool thing to do) but it is a University person that used to get a lot of hate on here (not JP). This person said that CPR has actually brought in a lot of NEW high level donors because of his connections to the area (and not just football dononations but donations to the University) so this may be something that plays a part of the decision (especially if Leath gets involved).

It would be a check for $4.5 million paid within a month of firing him and then the additional $300k wouldn't be due for more than two years. But it would be $4.8 million total basically. Maybe a little more if he gets canned before December 31 depending how exactly the contract is written.

Exactly. I would rather donate my resoruces to help a coach succeed not lose their job.

But then if I were donor who has already donated significantly to help a coach succeed -- and in my mind he has not succeeded, I'm getting restless.

Either way, we're experiencing one of the more unfavorable outcomes have could have occurred when that 10 year contract was signed.

I don't have a link, but from what I've been told, is that there's already been a conversation between JP and CPR.

Sounds like CPR was told he will be able to finish out the season, but he won't be retained. I'm a little skeptical, because what if he some how wins out, but I think JP might want to be fair to the coaches as well and let them know where they stand. Just passing on the info is all.

I'm still not sold on the idea that Rhoads isn't our guy. It's not like he's not learning, and he's certainly an intelligent guy with a high capability of learning. This team might just be starting to blossom into something good. Let's see how they play this week versus Texas.

I agree that first half Saturday was amazing...

I also heard this direction came from Leath, at least said the donor I talked to.

It's taken Rhoads far too long to learn things that seemed pretty obviously observable from the stands. If the team is blossoming into something good, it's a perfect time to trash the staff and bring in a new staff capable of taking them to the next level.

I'm completely fine with Rhoads coaching the rest of the season. The next coach isn't coming from this staff so no use going the interim route.

By all means keep him till 2021. Just no extensions, JP.

Then Paul better get another win or two on his resume this year otherwise he might become a dline coach at North Texas next year.

Hell, I'm happy. We got revenge against KU and smashed a FCS team at home. Better than last year.
