Fellow Iowans: What do you call your evening meal?

Supper and I have never, ever understood calling lunch "dinner".

Gotta agree with this. I always get into arguments with my family over what time we're eating because of this. I've actually missed meals because my grandmother asked me to come over for dinner, and I showed up at 5 instead of noon.

My rule: how would you ask someone for a date?

If you ask someone for breakfast, it's in the morning.
If you ask someone for lunch, it's at noon.
If you ask someone for dinner, it's in the evening.
If you ask someone for supper (which I wouldn't do, but whatever), it's in the evening.

It depends... if I am in a formal place... like NYC or right now in the UK it is "dinner"... when I'm in the middle of America it is "supper"

I've only called it breakfast-dinner-supper on the weekends, probably from spending so many weekends eating huge meals at my grandma's house.

Been away from my home town in western Iowa for over ten years now, I still call a big noon meal on weekends Dinner sometimes and it confuses the crap out of my wife or anyone else around.

I've never lived on a farm, never been to a communist nation, and I do not have a different name for the biggest meal.

But I use dinner as the term for supper (though I do switch them out).

Dinner is the big meal of the day. Supper is a light meal always in the evening.

I big meal in the evening is Dinner, not supper. I light meal in the evening is supper, not dinner. I big meal at noon is dinner, not lunch. A light meal at noon is lunch, not dinner. Etc.

If the meal is at home I call it supper.
If the meal is at a restaurant I call it dinner.

What if you go to dinner at a supper club?

I always used supper until adulthood. Now my impression is that dinner is a polite and formal term for a social meal. Supper is sort of an impoverished word which carries more functional weight and less social meaning.

If you are working professionally I think it would be best to avoid a word like supper.
