I don't get Keokuk being on that list. I have never lived there, but, every time I visited it seemed like a fairly quiet little river town. Waterloo, well, there are some parts of that town that are pretty scary, and other areas that are nice.

:biglaugh: at the idea that Centerville is dangerous. Meth? Yes. Violent and dangerous? Not really.

This whole list is skewed because people on CF generally don't live in bad neighborhoods or participate in criminal activities. I've never felt unsafe in Mtown because my neighborhood is good and I don't go to the bars here.

I think this list is more about what cities are poor and therfore more likely to have populations commit petty crimes.

Hell a friend's car got stolen in Ames a few years back. Is ames more dangerous for me than marshalltown? This is all about our perceptions and experiences.

I grew up about 15 minutes from Marshalltown and it's pretty ******. There are very nice parts of the town but it's getting worse every year.

No Marshalltown?

Disappointed, I thought I was a badass.

Time to go ape **** to keep us on them map.

But in all seriousness, I've never understood why everyone thinks it's so bad as a native. Most people from crappy towns admit it is bad.

Marshalltown gets a bad rep because it's a less fluent 4A in central Iowa and there's a lot of Mexicans. Ever since they lost the meth capital status they've been on the rise.

The Dirty B is going to jump those 4 spots and lock down the most dangerous place.

The river towns are full of ****** off people in dying towns.

Having lived in the gutter growing up till I moved to Iowa, none of these places particularly scare me.

With violent crimes included, how is Iowa City not on the list?

Also, drive through East St Louis and show me this list with a straight face...

???? Not sure what you mean by "with violent crimes included"...if anything, IC's problem is drug trafficking. Seriously, I live in Johnson County, and I think in the whole of Iowa City, there's maybe a 4 block area that I'd be afraid to walk at night alone...and even that, I don't think that would be that dangerous if you're not a specific target for some reason (clear target for mugging, 'associated' with the wrong crew, etc.) Maybe you're thinking of the Iowa State student's tragic story? Even that was I think more domestic related than Iowa City related.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an apologist for the social problems of the Johnson County area (some specifically caused by the large population of Chicago students and their associated recreational activities, and the social justice goals of some of the more liberal residents of this little slice of socialist heaven), but I'm not going to put on a badge of courage for living in a 'dangerous' community anytime soon. If you're not into gangs or drugs, Iowa City is as soft as a hipster's year-round stocking hat.

Careful... last time I tried to point out the scary areas of Waterloo I was accused of being a racist... Doesn't change the fact that there are areas of town that most people (regardless of race) don't go... but don't bring that up. You'll be labeled a racist. Shame on you

EXACTLY! Sheesh I lived in Highland Illinois and we always were paranoid to leave Missouri after about 10pm for fear of not making it through ESTL... has a Gary Indiana feel to it with more you're gonna get stabbed vibe
