Fanatics, I need a good scary book. (Real Topic, not a set up for ISU bashing)

"It" freaked me out a little bit, if you liked it try "Pet Semetary". As for American Psycho, it left me feeling sick to my stomach - not a pleasant experience.

I am not much for gore but do enjoy suspense/mystery books...

Two slightly gory/psychological books I have enjoyed are:

1) Still Life with Crows
2) Cabinet of Curiosities

Both of these books are by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs. Good suspense..same main character in both books.

The disturbing part of Still Life with Crows isn't truly revealed until the final page of the book.

Great writers. Loved the Relic.

Another frightening read

Agree wholeheartedly. I'd recommend reading Haunted for this particular passage!

My favorite Palahniuk book is "Survivor," and it also fits on this list.

For those that have not read it, it's essentially the story of a man who grew up in a fanatical religious cult. One day the entire cult pulls a "Heaven's Gate" and commit mass suicide. Several members, including the main character are not present for the event, as they are completing individual mission work that keeps them away from the main cult, however in the following months they start dying off from apparent suicides relating to their programming as cultists. As the number of "Survivors" dwindle, the remaining cultists start to become famous as the whole country watches them die off. The main character is convinced that they are not suicides at all and rather that someone is systematically killing former cultists.

I won't go any further, and my synopsis doesn't really go into the themes that this book is dealing with. Regardless, it is a very good read.

Palahniuk, for what it's worth, does the best job of disturbing me. The story alluded to in the link, about the guy getting stuck at the bottom of a swimming pool, is one of the most unnerving things that I have ever seen put to paper.

This made me almost physically ill when riding an airplane. I had to force my husband to read it just so that I could make sure someone else was in equal states of utter disgust. Interesting book!

I understand that the TV show "Dexter" is actually based off of a series of books...haven't read them...yet

Great, Thanks for the ideas. I will pick up Haunted by Palahunik today. I will read the top ten list this year. These books look right up my alley. I am intrigued by the book"We need to talk about Kevin" so it will probably be my second read. Tx again CYKID

I finished Haunted this morning and picked up three more of the books on the list today. I will agree that Haunted is a pretty disturbing book.
The author points out in his notes that 73 people fainted while he read the books first short story to them on his book signing tours. He must be one hell of a storyteller because it didn't phase me like that.
I would love to find an audio of him reading it and see what I am missing. I wouldn't rate this book as one of my favorites but it was a quick read and definitely up there on the "how sick of a mind must you have to come up with this crap" scale. "We need to talk about Kevin" is next.

I have read all of Stephen King's books, but I think the most disturbing book I have read is "Flyboys" by James Bradley. It is a true story of several WWII pilots that get shot down and taken prisoner on the Pacific island of Chici Jima (one of the pilots is George H.W. Bush, but he manages to barely escape captivity). The atrocities inflicted on these boys by the Japanese turned my stomach. It's more disturbing than a Stephen King novel because it really happened.

Close...parts were filmed all around my community.

I grew up in the similar metropolis of Salix, pop. 500.

You from the area?
Yeah I am. I know they filmed a lot in Salix, Whiting and Hornick. A little in Sioux City.
My hometown is 1/4 the size of yours in River Valley school district. You must be a nontraditional grad student if you were in fifth grade when it filmed in 1984. Is that avatar a self-portrait? JK

I hate Pet Cemetery! I really liked IT, but the best SK book ever was one of his first, The Stand.

"It" was a little long for my taste, but still good. Totally agree on The Stand. Awesome book. I like The Gunslinger series too, but those and The Stand aren't really scary. The scariest books I've read are The Shining and Salem's Lot.

I really think IT was the scariest SK book but it probably has something to do with my clown fascination.

I finished the Painted Bird this weekend. A great book about a boy in Holocaust Period Germany and his struggle to survive. It is actually based on the authors childhood and has some really bizarre stories. Its a short read and well worth picking up. I am now reading" We need to talk about Kevin" and it is boring me to death.
