To me, you can't beat a good Stephen King book. You want something good and scary, try The Shining, Salems Lot, Pet Cemetery.
I hate Pet Cemetery! I really liked IT, but the best SK book ever was one of his first, The Stand.

I am not much for gore but do enjoy suspense/mystery books...
Two slightly gory/psychological books I have enjoyed are:
1) Still Life with Crows
2) Cabinet of Curiosities
Both of these books are by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs. Good suspense..same main character in both books.
The disturbing part of Still Life with Crows isn't truly revealed until the final page of the book.
Agree wholeheartedly. I'd recommend reading Haunted for this particular passage!
Palahniuk, for what it's worth, does the best job of disturbing me. The story alluded to in the link, about the guy getting stuck at the bottom of a swimming pool, is one of the most unnerving things that I have ever seen put to paper.
I understand that the TV show "Dexter" is actually based off of a series of books...haven't read them...yet
Whiting, Iowa? That collection includes "Children of the Corn". I read this book in the 5th grade, because they were making the movie in my hometown!
Whiting, Iowa?
Yeah I am. I know they filmed a lot in Salix, Whiting and Hornick. A little in Sioux City.Close...parts were filmed all around my community.
I grew up in the similar metropolis of Salix, pop. 500.
You from the area?
I will be homebound this week and would like to read a good scary book. Scary to me would be the likes of IT, The Ring, or The Exorcist. I'm not so much into gore as I am fear. Any of you read any good scary books lately that can pass on a suggestion?
