Fanatics, I need a good scary book. (Real Topic, not a set up for ISU bashing)

I will be homebound this week and would like to read a good scary book. Scary to me would be the likes of IT, The Ring, or The Exorcist. I'm not so much into gore as I am fear. Any of you read any good scary books lately that can pass on a suggestion?

Mirror by Graham Masterton. There are actually several by Masterton but I think Mirror was the "Scariest". Masterton can be a little hard to find but he's worth it.

Some of his books get pretty graphic however but he writes really good suspense.

Thanks for the list, I'll definitely have to check some of those out. Looks like CYKID won't find many better than the books on that list.

The only one on that list that I have read is Misery.

Have you read #1 yet? That sounds interesting.

Yes, I have. Haunted is not on of Palahniuk's most well-reviewed books, but I liked it.

Side note: #9, Perfume, is what Lucca Staiger listed as his favorite book in an interview.

I'm in grad school right now, and have little time for reading for pleasure. I love recommending books to live vicariously through others.

If anyone reads these, PM me your reviews!!

Try "Night Shift" by Stephen King. It's a collection of shorter stories, including the book's namesake "Night Shift."

If one story doesn't do it for you, try the next.

That collection includes "Children of the Corn". I read this book in the 5th grade, because they were making the movie in my hometown!

I am not much for gore but do enjoy suspense/mystery books...

Two slightly gory/psychological books I have enjoyed are:

1) Still Life with Crows
2) Cabinet of Curiosities

Both of these books are by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs. Good suspense..same main character in both books.

The disturbing part of Still Life with Crows isn't truly revealed until the final page of the book.

I think it is worth noting that Bret Easton Ellis has two books on the list, and honestly, Chuck Palahniuk could have several more. I remember going to a Barnes & Noble while I was traveling for work and picking up copies of American Psycho, Lullaby by Palahniuk, and then a Thomas the Train book that I bought for my nephew. The clerk looked at me like I was a serial killer.

Palahniuk, for what it's worth, does the best job of disturbing me. The story alluded to in the link, about the guy getting stuck at the bottom of a swimming pool, is one of the most unnerving things that I have ever seen put to paper.

Agree wholeheartedly. I'd recommend reading Haunted for this particular passage!

To me, you can't beat a good Stephen King book. Dean R. Koontz isn't bad, but King is the man. You want something good and scary, try The Shining, Salems Lot, Pet Cemetery.

Speaking of Stephen King, The Talisman is also excellent.

Agreed. Nightmares and Dreamscapes is also an excellent collection of short stories by King.
