This tweet (and reply below) on expectations is spot on for me and people my age (Class of 2020). I don’t agree with the tweet on not showing up for the team but this explains why some people on this board are more angry than others…

Are people literally saying that fans shouldn't show up for this team? Seriously? On what idiotic planet are they from.

This team is full of guys who stayed at Iowa State for not much money. And who gave us a god damned fun two months. And people are going to abandon the team after 1 ******* loss?

Class of 2020 posting a tweet about not showing up over one loss.

At Iowa State.

Shocking.
Right? Man I get it the bar has been raised, and the fans that really saw and followed before Campbell need to remember it’s been awhile since those times too. But damn the newer fans have absolutely zero clue how lucky they are. It’s been a nice slow build to get the program to remain at this level we are at. I can’t even remember the last time I went into a game and thought there was absolutely no chance we would be competitive, let alone win. That used to be the norm prior to Campbell and definitely prior to Rhoads. We need to always aim high and not settle BUT that doesn’t mean being ridiculous and out of touch with reality.

Serious question - why does it matter that we used to suck at football? What relevance does it have to the Team’s performance or mentality or results this season? Why is “perspective” (in relation to the program’s history or whatever) important or helpful (or something newer fans need to educate themselves on) this season?

Context matters. Younger fans need to at least appreciate the context that older fans bring. But really this isn't about context. That would be a conversation if we were 5-3 or 4-4. Rather this is just some asinine fans who think that 7-1 deserves some type of "blood letting." They are morons. Being upset about a loss is fine. Texas Tech is 6-3. It wasn't Northern Illinois. Plain and simple many young fans aren't "entitled" rather they are uninformed. The minute they stop ******** and start contributing to We Will or the Cyclone Club so that we don't have to consistently pay our coaching staff the 11th or 12th best salary in the Big 12 then maybe I will be a bit more interested in their collective thoughts.

It doesn't, not entirely. But at the same time... it is about context.

If you said coming into the season, absolutely bare minimum, you win 7 games and beat Iowa, most fans would maybe not thrilled, but also, would be OK.

I was a fan through Walden and was alive but not a fan as I was very young during the end of Criner. But I remember raking leaves in the fall listening to Iowa State vs Nebraska being down 63-0 or 63-14 etc. So context kinda matters.

But the idea that a 7-1 team with a 1 point loss people shouldn't show up for... that's insane. I get the disappointment and it was an ugly loss, albeit not on the scoreboard.

But we need to appreciate having a chance to win 9-10 games while being disappointed at losing a winnable home game. You need to be able to do both. Appreciate the run, appreciate what we could still achieve though its tougher now - and be disappointed. I don't get why it has to be either the best thing ever and then the second you hit a speed bump its the end of the world.

Cause I'm just gonna say... if that's your approach , man, life's going to rip you apart, my friend, if it hasn't already. Cause sometimes there aren't speed bumps but damn Grand Canyon sized craters . So I'd say its not so much about context per say, but remembering that you can both be happy with a great start to the season, support the team, but be disappointed.

Don't get married or have children if you can't handle a little disappointment without wanting to take your ball and run home every time. That's my unsolicited advice.

Sorry didn't realize the tweet didn't actually get posted. The text of the tweet was (paraphrasing here):

People are getting mad at CyHoff (guy who said he wasn't showing up for the Cincy game, which again both Pluto (OP) and I disagree with) are kinda missing the point. He's a twitter troll and has been doing this bit for years so no need to take him seriously.

The main point is that there is a massive gulf in expectations between people my age and the older crowd. The expectations of the older crowd seems to me and others my age is that not being a doormat anymore is all you need. I hate this mentality. It is a loser's mentality. Low expectations => low performance.

Okay end the rough summary. Wish I could've gone back and reread it since I actually thought it was a good couple tweets with some thought put into them. Below is my opinion expanded on a bit more.

No one in our generation is saying we should be competing for natties every year. Heck I doubt we will ever play in a national championship game, would give my left nut to see that happen. We know we aren't Ohio State, Georgia, etc. But to sit here and say, given our projected strength of schedule the next several years and say we should be happy with non-double digit win totals in multiple of those years is silly (if we truly believe Matt Campbell is THAT GUY). If it does not happen now it will never happen. I am sure I will get flamed for this as the people of my generation are not on message boards these days but I just want you to know what people who actually went to school during the Campbell era think. We want to take the next step and won't settle for being 2nd worst. Will you?

So if we don’t win the conference, we are 2nd worst? Gotcha Ricky Bobby.
