It's not the expectations that are annoying for me, it's the handling of it when expectations aren't met. Throwing tantrums on twitter or refusing to go to games is just the adult version of what my toddlers do when they lose at Candyland.

As long as your generation donates to Cyclone Club and contributes to We Will in a manner that is reflective of their expectations. The fact that Campbell has raised the profile that 7-5 is a disappointment is amazing. But the reality is that 8-4 and 9-3 should never be viewed as disappointing seasons unless you are a blue blood.Sorry didn't realize the tweet didn't actually get posted. The text of the tweet was (paraphrasing here):
People are getting mad at CyHoff (guy who said he wasn't showing up for the Cincy game, which again both Pluto (OP) and I disagree with) are kinda missing the point. He's a twitter troll and has been doing this bit for years so no need to take him seriously.
The main point is that there is a massive gulf in expectations between people my age and the older crowd. The expectations of the older crowd seems to me and others my age is that not being a doormat anymore is all you need. I hate this mentality. It is a loser's mentality. Low expectations => low performance.
Okay end the rough summary. Wish I could've gone back and reread it since I actually thought it was a good couple tweets with some thought put into them. Below is my opinion expanded on a bit more.
No one in our generation is saying we should be competing for natties every year. Heck I doubt we will ever play in a national championship game, would give my left nut to see that happen. We know we aren't Ohio State, Georgia, etc. But to sit here and say, given our projected strength of schedule the next several years and say we should be happy with non-double digit win totals in multiple of those years is silly (if we truly believe Matt Campbell is THAT GUY). If it does not happen now it will never happen. I am sure I will get flamed for this as the people of my generation are not on message boards these days but I just want you to know what people who actually went to school during the Campbell era think. We want to take the next step and won't settle for being 2nd worst. Will you?
Also in the bottom of giving to the collective and Cyclone Club.Friendly reminder that even in the new look Big XII we're near the bottom in recruiting rankings and the fact we're even in the conversation for the CCG this late in the season is incredible, especially with the injuries we've sustained.
Tough to have double digit wins after the 8th game of the season.Sorry didn't realize the tweet didn't actually get posted. The text of the tweet was (paraphrasing here):

My only regret is that I can only dumb this post once.No I am saying Saturday was an unacceptable loss. There are plenty of people that say "7-1, why are we complaining? Our preseason win projection was 7.5!!!!" like holy **** expectations can and should change when we are in the driver's seat for conference contention. This is not the 90s anymore. We don't look like a team that could win the conference right now and that is what is upsetting people my age despite the weak schedule we get to play.
It always surprises me when I see those rankings. My frustration with Campbell is that it seems like he underachieves for the talent level that I perceive we have, but then I look at recruiting rankings and we're typically like 9th in the Big 12. The real story is more like we recruit a lot of unheralded players and turn them into 3- and 4-star type talent that can compete (eventually) with much higher-rated teams.
I hate Pasch now! Hah.I figured a fumble was coming at some point when Pasch noted ISU hadn't lost a fumble this season.
He also mentioned ISU being one of least-penalized teams more than once, and the penalties seemed to accumulate after that.![]()
That's a fair point. Except for the word 'expect'.Can I simultaneously agree with you and also at the exact same time expect (based on the 8 games actually played by Iowa State and the rest of the conference this specific/current season) to compete for 4-0 down the stretch and get to the title game, and be bummed out if we don’t? Or do recruiting rankings trump play on the field / games that have actually happened in real life?
Dude, it hasn't been bad all year. You just want more, and that's OK. Reign in your negative vibe a little. Let's see how the rest of the season plays out.Offense has been bad all year, when you think about a lot of our games we should have been scoring a lot more given our talent level. Rocco and mouser ain’t it.
Thanks for the note. That's a fair point. Except for the word 'expect'.
We are all disappointed that we lost. We will all be disappointed if we don't win the CCG, or at least hit 10 wins this season. What we should probably expect (again until we consistently win or are close to winning the CCG three or four times +, and until our recruiting rankings are top half in the conference) is to run into some games that we lose, when maybe we shouldn't have. Or, we just lose a few games.
The knowledge of this doesn't make losing easier. That's what I see here, but we are always running a bit against the grain.
I'm still hopeful we can win the CCG. Maybe though, I don't expect it until it happens.
Good point. As I re-read some of your posts, I can see and read your intent better, and have no problems with them. Thanks for the note.
Please though read the entire sentence. I stated that I expect to compete for 4-0. I don’t expect to go 4-0.
I like clutching pearls. As long as they are my own.So basically, you just freak out immediately you are saying. We are still controlling our own destiny so we had a bad loss, it happens. Gotta move on and not clutch our pearls due to one slip up.
What! There's a BB game tonight?Meant to reply to this earlier. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I agree with what you have here.
Personally, I just don't think there are very many people (at all - not here anyway) that are SO PISSED about Saturday that it is affecting their life, their lives, their relationships, their jobs, etc. Maybe a few dumba$$es on Twitter but those types of posts are just so outlandish it could just be a drunk college kid saying something stupid and not even remembering it the next day.
Overall, I am just not seeing THAT many posters here that are crazy overboard expressing their disappointment. I truly the majority here are reasonable. I would wager that the vast majority of folks here are still really pumped about the rest of the season and excited for basketball to start tonight too. Going to be a fun winter ahead!
Re-read what he is saying. He is a good fan, making good and valid points, and being very respectful about it.Because you act like ISU is some financial and recruiting juggernaut. It's actually the opposite and the football team and coaching staff have far, far exceeded their talent rankings and resources. Then a bunch of crybabies talk about their "expectations" and disappointment in the team that has the best record EVER at ISU. For all the ******** about Campbell, I don't know how you don't crown him as the best coach in the Big 12 and one of the best in the nation.
KU has gotten us the past two years. This is a really big game and we need to turn that around. No time like the present. Bigger still now after a disappointing home loss.Agree. I think the best thing for this team is to get the heck away from Ames and play a game somewhere else this weekend. Clear their minds. They’ve seemed to be better focused on the road this year and have looked tight in spots at home.
Time to get back at it against KU. Gotta respond after the tough loss!
