Exactly St. Louis probably doesn't have a lot of KU fans, or maybe not that many college basketball fans, so there are that many more tickets for KU fans in KC and other parts of Missouri. Plus St. Louis already has an advantage because there are more tickets to sell.

I'm sure there will plenty of tickets for KU fans, or whoever, no matter where they go, but I think the Des Moines site is going to require them going to secondary tickets markets because there are less to start with, and since it's Des Moines's first year, many locals will buy tickets immediately.

Are you trying to go out of the way to be that paranoid? It's simple - if KU is one of the best teams in 2016, they will be playing in Des Moines. The whole "Well, St. Louis doesn't have that many fans so we'll make KU fans go further out of their way to play in St. Louis" is just you and your "The NCAA will go to any length to screw ISU" mentality.

If KU is one of the best Midwest teams, they'll be playing in Des Moines. /discussion

Seems like this falls into the same old situation for the state of Iowa. We are in no-man's land for sports in general. That's why every pro sports team in the midwest claims Iowa as part of their "home territory" for TV rights. College sports is the same. Big 12 uses Dallas as it's base, along with KC and OKC. Big 10 uses Chicago and Indy. MVC uses St. Louis. If Iowans want to host a major event, a local school will need to step up. The conference affiliates have their focus pointed in other directions.

Because the other schools (Iowa, Drake) have tried & failed. Will open up the possibility of future tournaments coming back to DSM with a different host school.
Doubt that either one of those schools would take advice from ISU in trying to secure a bid.

I don't understand the need for Iowa State to help DM. ISU will get very little credit for hosting, and the hawks or UNI
will get to play there if eligible inorder to sell tickets. Cyclones will end up playing as far away from Ames as possible inorder to prevent fans from going.

I am guessing that a lot of posters on this site live in the DSM metro. This is a huge deal for the local economy and economic development of the area. it is "getting over the hump", if you will.

Being the host school, do we get early access to pre-order tickets? I could see ordering some just to make some bank off KU fans.

Only the top 4 seeds are placed according to location; seed 5-16 have no location considerations at all (other than not playing at a site hosted by that school).

this is correct.

people seems to be confusing things with the womens setup, which des moines also hosted recently with good success. the "pod" system gives top 4 seeds geographical protection, if not in close location, at least in a location that keeps you from playing near your opponents home. this actually was developed by the NCAA after MSU basically got a home game vs ISU in 2000, even though we were a #2 seed.

Whoa there is a lot of ignorance in this thread. This is the biggest sporting event the state has ever seen and people are complaining about it? That seems crazy to me. Yes it sucks that Iowa State can't play there but that doesnt mean that Drake can't host it once they see how great of a host site Des Moines is (which I fully expect) then Iowa State will be able to play there. Its not really that hard to understand. Just because it doesnt help RIGHT NOW doesnt mean it wont in the future. Very smart by Pollard and exciting for basketball fans in the state.

Paranoid? I think we're arguing about two different things. I don't give two ***** about where KU plays.

Because ISU wasn't going to play in Des Moines in 2016 regardless. Iowa and Drake have both attempted to host a Des Moines site in the past and both failed. Which means if any other institution tried to land this bid for Des Moines, it probably fails. instead, ISU stepped in and got done what nobody else in the state was able to do. Not to mention the NCAA likes to return to successful sites, so if and when Des Moines does a great job next year, it will be much more likely for the NCAA to accept a bid with Drake or MVC as the host in the future.

I know Drake tried this back a few years ago....2009 I think, but when did Iowa try? Not saying they didn't.....just don't remember it.

I suppose I'm just more of the thought 1) There's a host school? 2) What the hell do they actually do? 3) why?

I get the idea that getting the tourney here is clearly a good thing. That it opens the doors to future tourneys being hosted here where we may benefit. I don't understand the host part of it and the reasoning to exclude the team from it's location. Well - I more of less "get" that. But given our experience of playing tOSU in Dayton, Kentucky in Louisville and MSU in Auburn Hills - it seems like a strange rule.

St. Louis and Milwaukee are both closer to Omaha. In fact if you add up the time it takes to get from Omaha to St. Louis and Omaha to Milwaukee it is less than going from Omaha to San Antonio.

St. Louis was taken by KU and Wichita and Milwaukee was taken by Michigan and Wisconsin. By the time Creighton was up for seeding the closest location to them was San Antonio.

I'm excited and it will be interesting to see how many people will be at the game between St Johns and Florida Gulf Coast at 11:30 AM on that first Thursday/Friday.
