I worked at DV's right up until it closed. The food was an awesome perk. If you thought the menu was good, you should have seen some of the custom-made Frankestein dishes we came up with in the back!

It's a family owned business, and the family made a decision to close the Ames location over Christmas 2004. There were more than a few reasons. The family was too far away to really watch over the place. The building was and still is a piece of crap. It was originally a small gas/service station. If you look closely you can see that the front windows are really just boxed in garage doors. The fuel pump master shut offs were still in the building when I worked there. Another concern was the fuel tanks from the old gas station that are still to this day underneath the parking lot (which is why it looks like a giant sinkhole). There are regulations that require the removal of old tanks now, but they were not in place when the gas station closed. The tanks are filled with sand and along with the old lines still pose an ecological problem that edges closer toward removal every year. That is expensive.

The family tried to keep the place open. In the last year of operation they resecured a liquor license and had plans for a large luch buffet. Realistically it stayed open longer than it should have. I miss the hell out of the place. The work atmosphere was great and the employees were a pretty tight bunch that I'm glad to have been a part of.

DaVinci's used to have a cream cheese with canadian bacon + pineapple pizza back in 1991 that at the time just blew away my poor sheltered pizza life of Happy Joes and Godfathers. All of this DaVinci's talk is making me hungry.

Since the topic is Ames food, is Cafe Baudelaire still in business? Used to love their brazilian sandwich (can't remember what it was called though).

I reflect back on hitting the "fox lounge" to score possible hot granny action following strikeouts at the usual normal scenes.....what a den of debauchery and un-holyness

That is why they folded. They failed to clean up their act in time. Those poor Ewoks.
