Iowa State is the only Big 12 team with land right now.

They are also one of the few teams to have land on the historical map as well.

I saw last week that we were on the historic map, awesome.

I know all of this is 1000% meaningless, but I check it weekly none the less. r/cfb is also hugely into it.

Absolutely. I shouldn't take credit for finding this as I definitely stole it from r/cfb.

I also check this from time to time. Can someone give me the cliff notes to how the hell this thing actually works?

At the start of the season, colleges own land(counties) based on geography. Example is Iowa State would own counties around Ames and Western Iowa. Iowa would own counties in eastern Iowa.

After every week, you can gain or lose counties that other schools own. When Iowa beat Iowa State, Iowa took over the counties that Iowa State owned.

That’s the reason Iowa State owns so many counties. West Virginia, OSU, Baylor had counties that Iowa State got because of beating them.

If ISU loses, all the territories ISU has on the map go to the team that beat ISU.

I didn't think about this until reading it. Because UT beat OU and ISU beat WVU, the winner of the ISU/UT game will end up with all the Big12 territory.

Iowa State and Texas will fight to keep their Big 12 title hopes alive and, more importantly, will also be playing for all of the land that the Big 12 owns.

I just noticed that ISU has territory in Alaska (some of the Aleutian Islands are closer to Hawai'i than Washington). So I decided to count and best I can tell ISU now has territory in 23 of the 50 states.

It is possible I could be wrong about this (sometimes I am wrong, I just never tell that to my wife!), but what I love about that map right now is that no Texas teams own any of Texas at all! Ha! Love that! All of Texas is soft and ripe for the picking!!!

I hadn't checked the map in the past couple of weeks, so I was curious how Iowa State acquired Hawaii. I couldn't resist checking. I think this was the path:
  • Hawaii lost to Army
  • Army lost to Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma lost to Texas
  • Texas lost to Oklahoma State
  • Oklahoma State lost to Baylor
  • Baylor lost to Iowa State
---> Did I omit any steps?
