The Cubs put basically all their eggs in the Prior/Wood basket more times than one and got burned almost the same number of times.

The difference this time is that last year and this next season they actually assembled a team that they weren't counting on either to play. If either of them are healthy its just a bonus. In 2005 they didn't sign any extra pitchers for the rotation so when both went down they basically had a rotation of Zambrano and 4 rookies.

I wish good chance but I think they might be set on him possibly going to the rotation. I'd like to get rid of him but I don't think it's very likely.

I heard they were looking at him to start and I knocked myself out pounding my head into the wall.

30 isn't past your prime, especially in baseball and especially for a pitcher.

Yeah, I heard they may start Dempster also. Which means Wood and Marmol will compete for the closing spot. I bet they decided to lock up Wood after Cordero went to the Reds. Either way those two out of the bullpen will be nice. Now Cubs need to get another starter and another bat.

I think trying to find a place for Dempster in the rotation is crazy. They already have Marquis who was 'Mr. Inconsistent' last year. Let him fight it out for a spot in the pen, but not as closer. Let Wood and Marmol battle it out fort the 9th inning.

The Cubs will need Dempster in the rotation as Marquis and/or Marshall will most likely be traded for a left hand hitting right fielder.

Chicagosports.com reports they signed Wood to be the closer and move Dumpster to the rotation. Wood himself was quoted as saying he doesn't think its a good idea to try to be a starter again this soon and likes the challenge of being the closer.

I'm still not sold on Dumpster in the rotation. They tried that before they moved him to the closer and he was terrible. On top of that if they guy can't get 3 outs an inning without giving up some hits or a homeer how is that going to translate when you need 5-6 good innings from him consistently?

I think some of you are being a little too hard on Dempster. Sure he looked lackluster at times last year but he still saved 28 of 31 of his chances. The bad thing is that his ERA was well over 4.00 when he last was a starting pitcher and he walked something like 70 guys in 110 innings of pitching. Without looking, I guess that's probably not much worse than Marquis last year.

Do you get racked up for a blown save - if you don't come into a save situation?

$1 million for a one year contract should have been the max offer to Kerry. He can't stay healthy and rarely came into games this past season. I'm not sure why the Cubs don't just cut the cord. I used to be a big Kerry Wood fan, but the Cubs have given him so much money to do basically nothing. I think he was on salary for 2 years at $10+ million per year and didn't pitch in more than 30 games or so.

BTW, tough to believe the negativity about Mark Prior. I had heard he's pleasant around the clubhouse, and he even bought that full page ad in the Rag after his last rehab start here to thank the fans.

I like Mark and don't really want to believe it either. But have heard it from a few people - nobody special though.

My father in law went in to get tickets a few years back when Prior was here, and Prior was in the offices down at Sec Taylor. Said he was polite and pleasant enough.
