I hate to post anything from a hawk win but I'm watching '85 UI vs MI game on espn classic right now and didn't realize there was a time in college football when crowd noise wasn't allowed, the play clock is stopped if the crowd is too loud for the opposing teams offense. It got me to thinking that the NCAA has had a lot of dumb rules and not just the ridiculous new clock rules. Go Cyclones hopefully tech's qb will continue his fumbleitis

Maybe they realized that football games aren't tennis matches. Yikes.

Or maybe it could be abused easily. Crowd yelling for an extended period of time could give the home team an extended time out.

It was only penalized to the home team, not to the visitor. But if you've got a large road crowd you could defeat that provision as well. All and all it's basically unenforceable.

The part you might not have known about the rule? It wasn't eliminated until this year. It was just never called.

I think another dumb rule was when they didn't allow fumbles to be advanced by the recovering team.

Also, I think there was a point where you couldn't advance an interception either.

Remember the great halo rule of a few seasons ago?

You know.....it wasn't that bad of a rule, its just that the refs didn't know how the hell to properly enforce it. If you had a gunner coming down full speed at a punt returner, it would make it look like he was inside the "halo" after he crushes the returner a split second after the catch, even if that wasn't the case.

Glad they got rid of that rule, though. It was too subjective as there was no way an official could come out and measure the distance between a returner and defender. Think it was a 15 yard penalty, too....an absolute killer.

ya know what rule i think is dumb? having the hash marks yards outside the goal posts. you know how many kicks that has caused our kickers to miss (j/k, but it's still kinda dumb)
