Re: CR Gazette Letter to Editor: "Foul disparity helped ISU beat UI"

Below is an actual letter that the Cedar Rapids Gazette chose to print in today's edition of their paper as well as make available online.

I am curious if Mr. Burke wrote a similar letter following Iowa's close win over Nebraska-Omaha, when UNO was whistled for 30 fouls to Iowa's 15.

I am also glad to see that the important issues of Eastern Iowa are being discussed in that region's most major newspaper.

Here is the letter:

Foul disparity helped ISU beat UI | TheGazette

They are still complaining about this? Don't they know that they shot over 200 more FTs then their opponents before the played us. They should go worry about Nebraska, who probably cost them a tourney spot last year.

Y'all got trolled and took the bait.
I doubt it.....

This has been the montra of choice since the completion of that game here in Eastern Iowa. I've heard this and similar excuses in coffee shops, while in-line at Costco, at Cub Scout meetings and from elementary school teachers. To them the game was called un-fair and the stats prove the disparity.

The game was over two weeks ago..that dude needs to let it go. Iowa still has a great shot to make the tournament despite the loss. Really the loss to us probably won't hurt them much in the long run.

The Gazette is a complete joke. Whenever I go home to visit family I approach reading it as entertainment. As a kid growing up, the paper used to include "The Mini Page" on Mondays. Nowadays, the whole thing is the Mini-Page. Granted, the whole newsprint industry is going the way of the dinosaur, and it's really evident in the small market areas. The sports page might as well be the Iowa Football daily, along with AP articles on NASCAR. I really feel for the ISU alumni living in their coverage area. Not a lot can be said about the local TV news media in eastern Iowa either.

This is exactly why EIU should stick to being a "football school."

Give them a few years and they'll go back down the crapper without even needing a plunger.

Iowa got bent over and took it like a cheap ***** in the last 2 minutes of that game. They got exactly what they deserved.....refs had zero to do with it

Yet he fails to notice or at least mention that ISU let a lot of uncontested layups and dunks down low because they were trying to avoid fouls and Iowa was aggressively defending the lane which helps in disparity of fouls just by the teams' strategies

The continued use of this "excuse" is every bit as derpy as that letter to the editor. Stop saying it and stop making us look bad.

Fouls were ISU=20 UI=27. Not like it's off the charts. Real lame of a newspaper to even print this garbage as most of you have pointed out the obvious. Hurts to be little brother in basketball.

This!!! You beat me to it. I guess Iowa fouled more around the rim when we were in the act of shooting. Not a surprising stat when one team is quicker and more athletic. Maybe Iowa missed more front end of 1&1 situations.

In either case, the better team one . So, Mr. Burke can do what my kids to a lollipop. _ _ _ _ IT !!

I love how Mr. Derp tries to sound all objective by referring to the teams as Iowa State University and the University of Iowa and then says "our team" at the end when he's talking about Fran.

Don't include me in your "our team" talk, *** hat. Iowa City isn't my team.

Also when looking at this number, what were the totals on the +1's attempts after a hoop was made? And obviously the missing a front end of the 1 and 1 shot as well. I don't care to dig deeper to figure those out, but they will tell more of a story here. A story that we don't care about now because it was 2 weeks ago!

I think Iowa missed the front end of 5 one and one opportunities. We only missed on the front end once.

It is odd that refs continually ignore the rule that the same number of fouls shall be charged to each of the teams involved.

Re: CR Gazette Letter to Editor: "Foul disparity helped ISU beat UI"

This is the same "newspaper" that waited until almost noon to post online that we had won the Diamond Head Classic. How much work is it to copy and paste an AP article?

The Gazette somewhat proudly announced a few months ago that they are no longer affiliated with the AP. The fees were too high, they said, and not worth the benefit of using AP articles ... especially as the Gazette is a more "locally focused" product and their readers don't care as much for national and international news. So the Diamond Head Classic story was probably from the print outfit known as The Sports Xchange (no lie).

It was also interesting, after the proud announcement of saving money by cutting the AP, that subscribers got notice yesterday that subscription rates are going up.

I disagree with you here. I'm going to guess as to what the poster meant...

If we got beat, we pretty much didn't challenge the shot. I don't think he is saying that we didn't TRY to play defense, of course we were not letting them blow past us for layups on purpose. But in the cases where that happened, we didn't challenge the shot from behind and hack them or whatever. I remember White beating Kane with a backdoor cut and dunking it. Niang, Ejim, and Kane (from behind let him go).

Contrast that with the Kane inbounds off the Dingleberry and he's hacked for an "and one". The defensive philosophies were different between the two teams.

I'm not saying it's a good thing to get beat to the rim like we did against Iowa on many occasions, or even that it's a part of the game plan. What I am saying is that when we WERE beat to the rim, we didn't make it worse and foul them. I believe that WAS a part of the game plan.

With Iowa's "DEPTH", they just contested everything, and as a result committed more fouls.
