That’s not a commitment.

And what is a “verbal commitment” anyway? It’s nothing…. until they sign. Our staff shouldn’t have been counting on anything.

As for Kaleb, I don’t personally believe that Cal is a wise decision for football purposes……. but I will never blame a kid for going wherever it feels best for them.

I do wonder if he was just blown away by everything Cal has going for it….. that would be very easy to see happen.

What? If any coaches are counting on the word of a high school kid that technically hasn't even committed to them.... and hasn't even taken all their visits yet.... then that's on them.

I NEVER said that's what happened though did I? I have no idea if the staff thought they had him or not.... just said they shouldn't have counted on anything.

If I'm wrong in saying that, then I give up.

Is it possible he told Iowa State he was going to commit while on his visit, then told Cal he was going to commit on his visit, and his recruitment is still up in the air?

Quite possible. Some don't have the courage to say no on the spot. They'll agree just to get out of there, only to change their mind later. It happens in my industry all the time.

You people do realize, croots read this board? Best of luck to him. Top notch academics, and good weather. Best of luck to him. Iowa State will be fine.

Totally agree. I think I'd have a VERY tough time turning down Cal on a visit there. How do we think we know what is best for these kids? Some places just feel more like home, while others don't.

That's why it's on our staff if in fact they really wanted the kid that committed to "a BiG school" but held off because this kid said he's committed but not announcing.

Because that’s how recruiting works.

Exactly. He really liked Iowa State. He likes Cal even more. Good luck to him. Onto the next.

Yeah I agree. I don't want to sound like "sour grapes", I did really want Kaleb Johnson to commit to Iowa State, but I can't fault him for committing to Cal. Berkeley is a great academic school and if academics is important to him, that would be a great school for him to go to.

In my opinion running back is one of the less critical offensive positions for us to recruit in 2022, we have some great guys in earlier classes and I'm sure we will get great ones in this class and future classes.

Iowa fans have to be loving this though.... he might not be going to ISU or tOSU... couldn't have worked out better for them.

That's where their program is at now.... they aren't getting anyone.... so they just have to hope their opponents don't get any good recruits either.

I mean you realize he was the top back on their board too right?

Campbell has shown he can flip the RB room whenever needed. Montgomery supplanted Warren the year after he gained 1300 yards and Hall stepped in as a true freshman not missing a beat.

Depending upon academic area, think we still compare favorably with Cal, at least we used to be rated so. Both schools are AAU.

Ummmmm...... no. But nice try. We're a LOT better at football right now and into the future.... but not in academics.
Ok, not going to debate, as criteria often will be subjective. But I do know two ISU grads who beat out Berkley grads for high paying research jobs, but I realize that is anecdotal. I do admit we have not advanced our academic status in a number of years, as we have policies that have discouraged international students, and some out of state students etc. and have had increasing reliability on research and tuition dollars which I hope will change soon but we still have chops in engineering, science, ag and vet med that I know of, maybe more.
