Travis Hines makes a good point in this column about Leech's signing: he says that at a place like ISU, you need to take chances on high-risk / high-reward types of guys such as Lard and Leech. Link to his column:

Good Article by Hines thanks for posting. Really points out a good angle on the realities of recruiting to Ames and the need to take calculated chances.
When Prohm came in he said he was aware he needed to look at all avenues to get talent to compete in the B12. Taking the high upside recruit who may need some managing injury or accedemic is a risk worth taking. Actually if you compare it to the use of a scholarship on Brase or Holden types I am not sure it is that high of a cost.

The misspelling of academic really drives the point home

I wouldn’t even consider this a “high risk” situation... ISU will get “safer” recruits this year and it’s just one scholarship. I compare it to the Denver Nuggets taking Michael Porter Jr. Where they got him is extremely good value for the pick. Same goes for ISU considering the way our roster looks next year.

I'd love to see an article or short podcast with a doctor/trainer that specializes in similar injuries discussing the likelihood of Leech returning to 100%.

Kind of pivoting with this take but I would anticipate at least one but probably a couple Jucos or immediately eligible transfers with the remaining scholarships to help even out the classes.

I don't get this. I think you get the best high school talent possible and then tell the guys that will never play that they won't play and let them transfer. Evening out classes mattered when there weren't 800 transfers a year.

It's not a matter of recruiting over younger guys. It's a matter of experience and depth. Hoiberg didn't even out his classes and Prohm's team last year suffered because of it. Bringing in Juco guys that can bridge the gap and tighten the learning curve for the younger guys only makes the younger guys that much more ready the older they get.

Here is where we are right now assuming Wigginton comes back...

The class/positional balance on that is rather nice.

A JUCO guard/wing to replace Wigginton and 1-2 more freshmen, hopefully at least one guard and maybe a wing/big man, and it should be great.

Obviously, we have to see it on the court, but Prohm has done a good job re-balancing the roster and scholarship chart on the fly.

This is what it looked like his second year...

Great team and players, but yikes that was unbalanced.
