I didn't look, but I assume USC's helmets made the list as well then, right? Their helmet logo is actually harder to read than ours, for the casual fan.

Do you also see how it also spells WSC?

I will always see the fish now. Thanks. I think I am happy ours doesn't have a secret abbreviated code.

I agree with the old twister or the old throwback vs iowa votes. Maybe instead of the white helmet rumors to fix the cardinal on cardinal complaints....our new logo that most are warming to should be tried on yellow as a compromise. I think to do white would make it look like a high school helmet.
It spells WSU....The mouth is the U....I fail to see where you find the "C"...This has to be the most creative logo in all of college sports....

Second, Iowa State should go with an actual gold helmet and cardinal or gray facemask with the I-State logo...

If you add the top of the mouth, it most certainly could be seen as a C, or an O. I've gotten the same reaction from people though before when I asked what the C was for. As far as being the most creative, then we should have kept the twister bird. The Washington State logo is a mess for a helmet. I guess that's what bothers me most about our logo being on this. It's not a mess, it's not ugly, it is an I and State. It's a simple, legible logo. There are plenty out there that are much worse.

Man this discussion gets old.

Amen...I can't believe this stupid thread has been on the front page since being posted. We aren't doing ourselves any favors with our critics accusing us of having a massive inferiority complex when there are 40+ posts complaining about some internet writer saying our helmets are ugly. ******, who cares?

Why would you add the top of the mouth? That's clearly part of the S and not even attached to the bottom...

I still do not understand how anybody can find that mongoloid yellow chicken on a black helmet attractive. It may be THE ugliest symbol in all of college sports. Yet somebody brings up our helmet? Crazy.

I always thought it was WSC too, and they just didn't want to change their logo when they went from Washington State College to Washington State University.

I love our I-state logo. The first year I didn't like it - but it is really turning into our brand the longer we keep it.

I think you may be onto something here Watson, its an interesting concept to keep something long enough to make it our "brand". That has been the problem with Iowa State since time began, constantly changing uniforms/helmets over the years. I, for one love our helmets, they are simple. One thing Pollard said about the design is to have it use our school colors which are CARDINAL and GOLD on our helmets, no blue, white, canary yellow should be involved...EVER. He also wanted it simple so nobody asks the question what the **** is a cardinal doing on the helmet when you guys are the Cyclones? Dont get me wrong I love Cyc as a mascot but I dont want him on the Helmets.

PS the Tornado with the Iowa State above it looks like dog ****.

This. I thought they made that logo back when they were still WSC. When I look at it, I see it as "WSC".

At least it's still apt as "Washington State Cougars"

This is our best logo by far; too bad it's associated with a low point in our program:

I loved this one. The font is very 80's, but it is unique to our school and iconic.

1) I don't mind the I-State logo, but it just doesn't make sense to me that they slapped a cardinal "I" on a cardinal helmet. Needs more contrast... White or gold helmets, anyone?

2) I like the recent effort to shift back to our actual school colors, but I still think we missed the mark with our "gold." Yeah, it goes well with all the cardinal gear, but it's still yellow IMO, not gold. Would much rather see us mimic the SF 49ers' version of gold...

Sticking exclusively with that list, a bad-helmet list could include:

Akron
Kent
South Alabama
La Tech

I'm not sure how many of those I'd include in my "ugly helmet" top 10.

The category is "ugliest."

Iowa State's helmet could qualify as non-descript, generic, bland, but it isn't "ugly."

Bingo!!!! They really screwed up the color or shade of gold. They gave us YELLOW and not gold. If they would have went with the gold shade they used on the throwback uniforms, they would have had it right and it would have looked better.

As far as the helmets, i don't mind them, but the yeah the cardinal on cardinal really doesn't work. It doesn't. Helmet should be white or gold.

Man this discussion gets old.

ISU helmet changes have coincided with the coaching changes and no long term tradition was ever built. I can visualize the design process of former ISU helmet designs. Riddell's rep sat across the desk from the HC with a book of uniform colors, and the two drew something on a chalk board, or it was more likely drawn on a beer napkin, that was taken back to the Riddell offices for refinement, the final drawing was later submitted to the HC and approved, and helmet decals were produced. The current logo and decals were the result of research, opinions and expert Nike advice. I think we have moved up the marketing ladder, which is good if we do actually build a tradition.

Herky the Harelipped Chicken. The description seems fitting for some reason.
