I'm with you 100% on this part.

Cold sucks, but I'll take it over ice/icy roads. Snow is still better than ice, but being able to travel on totally clear roads basically all winter has been a big plus.
Yep, the almost 8 years I lived in KC ice storms were ridiculous compared to DSM. 1 night I was stuck at work late and had to run home to let the exes dog out, bosses boss expected me to come back. Jesus took the wheel multiple times on the ice rink roads.

You're still mad that Mom told you I was upset when they brought you home from the hospital, aren't you?

It’s so cold that even my kids elementary school is closed for tomorrow up here in MN. But hockey practice tonight? Nah, that’s always a go. Hockey never stops.

The forecast is supposed to have temps below what the district I work in uses as the threshold temps wise (and other area districts) but they didn't call it; I'm guessing it's because it's supposed to warm up throughout the morning and most rural districts are only starting late.

Yeah the forecast says -18 tomorrow morning at 8am where I’m at, Maple Grove, MN. Not sure what their cut off temp for school closings is.

Im in the DM Metro area now.
It was about 1 above today, which is cold, but not as bad as some try to say, when they use the feels like temp.

Forecast for -15 overnight. Which is cold, but most of us wont be outside. Although working outside in the middle of the night was a regular occurrence for me for many years, which did suck on the nights it was below -20, but I worked in extreme far north Iowa and in the lower half of MN during those years.

Didnt mean to claim it is not cold, just that I hate all the new "feels like" crap a lot of people seem to use anymore.

That being said, if my family would, I totally would be living far south of here, as many years of working in all weather outside, I have had my fill of winter, and hate everything about it. So I would be in TX, AZ or FL probably at this point if I could.

So yeah its cold.
Wind chill has been around since the 60s. Long time to hold a grudge.

Yes, its cold, but in reality not as bad as some want to believe.

I mean everyone goes by "feels like" now.

No -20 "feels Like" is not the same as -20 actual temp, which is what we all used to go by, a few years ago.

Because at -20 actual..... which is how we all figured out temperature until someone decided "feels like" was more important........ is probably more like -40 "feels like".

So a few years ago when it got to -20 outside everyone new yeah add the windchill and its really really cold.
Now everyone says well the feels like is below 0, so its really cold, like back when we went by actual temperature.

I get it, to a point. But people have conflated feels like to actual temps, and that is just not the case. I worked a lot of days outside, when actual temp was below -20 degrees, and I will tell you that when the actual temp gets that cold, it is a lot colder than when the "feels like" temp is -20.

They changed how they calculate wind chill (feels like) temp about a decade ago too, which actually changed the overall understanding of that calculation too. At some point when we change how we measure things, that have been measured that way for as long as measurements have existed, it doesnt make things more understandable.
The thermometer said -17 when I went out this morning. No it’s not -20 but seventeen below is still ******* cold and I don’t need someone telling me the windchill to know it.

Its not about wind chill. Yes I know its been around a long time. My point was when you would talk about the weather up until a few years ago, people would say its going to be 5 below with a -20 wind chill.

Now many times people dont even talk about the actual temp they only want to go by the "feels like" temp. And as I said, -20 feels like is very cold yes, but actual temp of -20 is colder. Because a few years ago, people talked about the actual temp and then assumed the wind chill on top of it.

Now we hear people say "it feels like -20 out, so its the same as when it was actually -20" But that is just false because almost always actual -20 will have a much lower wind chill itself. Like I said its fine to go by "feels like" temp, with the understanding its not the same thing as what the actual actual temps.

Not a grudge, just an annoying observation, of how things have changed.

I haven't noticed anyone using windchill/feels like any more than they have in the past. I will always mention both temp & windchill, as both are relevant.

This feels like the smash burgers all over again with you going on multi-post tirades about what a travesty this is lolol.

Balmy 20 here in St. Louis. Get my presentation done by 9:30 tomorrow morning and heading home. Not gonna wait for the snow to hit here.
Just landed in STL, and making my way downtown. It's fantastic. Almost as cold as Des Moines, but with a bunch of blowing snow!
