In Minnesota they have been talking about how we got frost depths around 40" which is the deepest it has been in years. I'm glad since it should help to kill off some of the insect pests (beetles, mosquitos, ticks, etc.) which have been getting progressively worse the last few years with mild winters.

I think you are right. It takes multiple cold years to affect the tick population. Japanese beetles try to keep their larvae protected in the soil so are directly affected by deep frost so hopefully our progressive JB problem will be stemmed this year.Already talked about this in the thread (I always thought the same) but it doesn't affect ticks that much or kill many off; they just take longer to emerge if it's colder longer.
Either way they hopefully don't come on strong for a while this year at least.
