For those in the "but he can recruit" camp, I'm pretty sure Prohm has recruited as many NBA draft picks as TJ, and has experience as a head coach of a top 25 team. Why is TJ more qualified again?

He's not.

I think you could be right that he would move on if he doesn't get the job, but I don't think you "know" that he left to UW for the experience to prove he could recruit players anywhere.

He stated that in a link I provided in an earlier post.

So yes, I CAN say that. He went to broaden his experiences. That is what Otz said. It was noted at that time to be quite a great hire for Coach Romar to get an assistant like Otzelberger who was perceived to be an excellent recruiter.

http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-basketball/t-j-otzelberger-leaves-washington/

Otzelberger was an assistant coach at Iowa State from 2006-2013, working under Greg McDermott before spending three seasons on Hoiberg’s staff.

In May 2013, Otzelberger agreed to a two-year deal worth $218,004 annually that was going to expire in August. At the time he joined Lorenzo Romar’s staff he said he needed a change.
“I just felt like this was the next step in my progression,” he told the Associated Press.
During his two years at UW, the Huskies finished 17-15 in 2013-14 and 16-15 this season while failing to advance in the postseason beyond the Pac-12 tournament.
Otzelberger was the recruiting coordinator at Washington. He was chiefly responsible for the Huskies signing junior-college transfers Quevyn Winters and Malik Dime. Winters, a junior guard, made one start in 27 appearances while averaging 3.4 points and 11.0 minutes this season. Dime, a 6-10 center who played at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, is among a heralded 2015 recruiting class ranked sixth nationally by Scout.com.

Ehh, he's probably not, but if he interviews better, then I'd still hire him over a mid major guy who has never stepped foot on power 5 school.

I think if you reread Chris' post and Jeremy's, you will see them mention the possibility that there are one or two "off the radar" candidates.

Not saying you're wrong, especially with JP's history, but how could there be any "off the radar" candidates due to either the search firm (which apparently must give out info since Andy Katz says who we're interviewing) or all the other protocol or media exposure put out there on this one?

Altman would be a hell of a good hire. He has been really good at Oregon.

Because just what Jeremy said yesterday, not as speculation, but as a statement....there ARE other names in the mix that cannot be put out in public because once it's public, there will be pressure (from non-ISU places) for that individual to deny interest.

I know the below will be certain:

Who ever is hired, there will be a vocal minority that will have pitchforks and torches. They will be loud, told you so, types. It will be embarrassing as the meltdown from last week.

Who ever is hired will fuel each and every conspiracy theory from the last two weeks and those theories will live on ... forever at CF.com

But once again......We would be telling Otzelberger we will take a low-major coach.....let's say it is Ohio Valley Conference Murray State Coach Steve Prohm.....over him. The message is pretty clear. You can be one of the best Assistants in the Country. You can be one of the best at your job. But we will NEVER consider you for a Head Coaching job unless you leave and get a Head Coaching job.

When Fred was hired that was 5 years ago. Otzelberger was 32 years old. And Fred was ........Fred Hoiberg.....the Mayor. WHY do you think that Otzelberger left a couple years ago?? It was to get some additional experience at another Power 5 Conference school. It was to prove to everyone that he could recruit players anywhere, regardless of location. Plus his wife had some ties to the Pacific Northwest at that time.

Now move forward 5 years. Otzelberger is now 37 years old. He is at the point where he wants to make a move to become a head coach. He does not want to be a lifetime assistant. Especially to guys who are about his age that are not named Fred Hoiberg, and that have resumes as unimpressive as these low and mid major coaches. Their resumes are no better than his.

Otzelberger will move on if he does not get the Iowa State job. Count on it.

The only thing that really matters is he stays for this year. If we decide on another more experienced coach over him, he'll probably leave to go coach a small school. And his offers will be better if he stays this year and the team goes far.

I don't care if ISU averaged 50 points a game as long as they held the other team to 40 points a game. ISU isn't a big name school where the AD can be picky like that. The most important thing is winning when talking about on the court stuff.

Playing up-tempo might help this current team but ISU should look at the bigger picture here, beyond next year.

Grinding it out on the court is going to be a thing of the past in 4 to 5 years. The NCAA is already making changes to speed up the game and give offenses a better chance (30 sec shot clock, larger restriction area, supposedly tighter whistles etc). Many people love the college atmosphere but consider the game hard to watch. They will do everything they can to fix that in the near future. I

owa St has set an identity the past 5 years and needs to stick with to sustain long term success imo. Kids loving playing in up-tempo systems, but it is matter of getting them to buy in on the defensive end also.

Fine. You go with our version of Fran McCaffery, so we can be like the Hoks.

If TJ is the coach, fine, but you provided an article that stated they went 17-15 and 16-15 and one of his big recruits played 11 minutes a game.

Flip that to 15-17 and 15-16 and you've got GMac.

I'm all about TJ at this point.

1. We all know how important players are.
2. He'd run Fred's system.

I still think there are 1 or 2 massive names that haven't been leaked. I wouldn't put it past JP.

Ehh, he's probably not, but if he interviews better, then I'd still hire him over a mid major guy who has never stepped foot on power 5 school.

If people think this is of such paramount importance that's fine, but I really don't understand why some are making this experience or lack of it such a big deal.

After all, I'm pretty sure both Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy didn't have that kind of Power 5/BCS experience before they came to Iowa State and I think we can all agree they both did pretty well, until ambition and personal demons got the best of them.
