(First post ... the internet desperately needs more anonymous opinions, right?)

As much as I hate the term "branding," our current brand is one of the most valuable things Fred left us. It opens the door to recruits and transfers that were over our heads before Fred. Hornacek is my first choice for all the obvious reasons everyone has listed already. But if TJ is a cost-effective way of preserving our brand I'm fine with that.

What is going to come out of all of this? If we have no Dana Altman then we have no splash hire. Frankly, NONE of these low and mid majors as well Otzelberger himself are a "splash hire".

IF Leath was wanting a splash hire, and these are the only guys being considered then Leath is going to be disappointed.

I think if you reread Chris' post and Jeremy's, you will see them mention the possibility that there are one or two "off the radar" candidates.

Once again, TJ will be gone as we will have effectively told him that he has no shot at a Head Coaching Job at Iowa State if he remains as an Assistant. Sorry, but that should be readily apparent.

If you are making the new hire as coach conditional on retaining Otzelberger then you are really kidding yourself. The selection of the new coach has to be made independent of whomever his assistants might be.

He's been gone and the team cratered, I don't think you worry about him leaving if you want to hire someone else.

He may get the job, be associate head coach, or leave, I'm ok with any of them.

So TJ told you that? I didn't know you guys were so close

When talking about assistants, why is TJ the only one being considered? There are plenty of top assistants in the country with better resumes than TJ. Are we just going to assume that none of them are interested, and therefore just offer the job to TJ?

Altman is not some big name hire.
What is your obsession with TJ? It's kind of creepy

I, for one, don't think Altman is a "splash" hire.
Old man.

But once again......We would be telling Otzelberger we will take a low-major coach.....let's say it is Ohio Valley Conference Murray State Coach Steve Prohm.....over him. The message is pretty clear. You can be one of the best Assistants in the Country. You can be one of the best at your job. But we will NEVER consider you for a Head Coaching job unless you leave and get a Head Coaching job.

When Fred was hired that was 5 years ago. Otzelberger was 32 years old. And Fred was ........Fred Hoiberg.....the Mayor. WHY do you think that Otzelberger left a couple years ago?? It was to get some additional experience at another Power 5 Conference school. It was to prove to everyone that he could recruit players anywhere, regardless of location. Plus his wife had some ties to the Pacific Northwest at that time.

Now move forward 5 years. Otzelberger is now 37 years old. He is at the point where he wants to make a move to become a head coach. He does not want to be a lifetime assistant. Especially to guys who are about his age that are not named Fred Hoiberg, and that have resumes as unimpressive as these low and mid major coaches. Their resumes are no better than his.

Otzelberger will move on if he does not get the Iowa State job. Count on it.

Otz needs to be in high demand instead of just leaving after this season. How do you know that there's any other P5 school that would even want him as their HC after next season? There's a reason he hasn't quite been declared the HC yet and that's because everyone is worried about his lack of experience. You don't often see a lot of 37 year old assistants getting promoted to a P5 head coach, especially of a program that's a top ten team and a title contender. If Otz leaves after next season then I highly doubt he gets a head coaching gig at another P5 school. He may have to settle for a mid-major and prove himself before he gets a big gig.

Old man.

Altman is 5 years older than Hornacek. And 5 years older than Brad Underwood. Altman is not old. He has just been a Head Coach for a helluva long time.

Altman is a helluva lot more splash than these low and mid major coaches listed. Talk about uninspiring.

I think you could be right that he would move on if he doesn't get the job, but I don't think you "know" that he left to UW for the experience to prove he could recruit players anywhere.

ONce again, a conditional hire.

I will make a prediction. IF Otzelberger is not chosen to be the Head Coach and Iowa State chooses a min-major coach, it is entirely possible that Otzelberger leaves sooner rather than later.

And you can not blame him. So many people overlooking his talents and not wishing to promote him.......and then say that it is imperative that we retain HIM to have success with some low-major coach. Otz may stay the one year and do all he can to help the team he knows and help recruited to have success. He is under contract. But I would bet that in a year or so he is definitely gone if one of these low-major coaches gets the job. We would be sending him a message that the job can never be his if he stays.

Everyone has said he has to have a HC job with success to get to be the coach at a place like ISU. Then those same people say he should accept being an underling to his third coach here for the good of the program, because he is important to recruiting success. Anybody think that Otz would look at those two situations and not choose to move on to bigger things in the near term?

Never said that he had to leave for a Power 5 Conference School. I said he would leave for a Head Coaching job since we would be telling him that is what he must do. It would likely be at a Mid-Major. And after he had success and took over for Bo Ryan at Wisconsin, most of you would scratch your head or your ***, and say WHY didn't we hire that guy instead of our Fran McCaffery clone.

I'd be disappointed as heckfire if it's Altman.

Because if we hired an assistant it wouldn't be off of a resume, it would be because he's had an almost 10 year job interview and proven to the AD that he can do the job.

People really need to get over the idea that hiring a basketball coach is as simple as picking out the best resume that came in the door.

Whether it's "never" or just "not right now," I think the ultimate outcome will be the same.

Here was my wild-*** prediction from yesterday. So far it's looking fairly accurate. The Hornacek leak was about a meeting not a contract, and we'll interview more candidates than I expected, but still.

Late this week or over the weekend, details leak about a contract offer to Hornacek, something like 5 years, $12M. Hornacek gets his team option picked up by the Suns and says no.

Next week we hear about interviews with 3 candidates, TJ, Prohm and one more.

Then mid-week there is a press conference announcing TJ as the new coach with lots of glowing praise for how well he handled the team during the past month and how he blew Leath away during the interview process.

Or something like that.

Also, #TeamBryce

We've come full circle to buddies with the AD.

For those in the "but he can recruit" camp, I'm pretty sure Prohm has recruited as many NBA draft picks as TJ, and has experience as a head coach of a top 25 team. Why is TJ more qualified again?
