He was coming in hot with some good overall seasons at Murray St.
The thing is he only made one NCAA tourney in 4 years at Murray his first stint there. I know Fred left us in a tough spot with his timing, but that's one of the reasons I wasn't happy about him in the first place.

Most mid-major guys get promoted based on a fee years of success, not making the tourney at only a 25% rate.

The guy never knew exactly what he wanted his team to be and it was reflected in recruiting and in-game coaching. It seems this continued when he returned to Murray. I don't think CSP could keep up with the changes to the game in the last four or five years. But he genuinely loved Iowa State so I won't bash his brains in.

They WERE the program in the OVC.

Big time step up to the MVC and he walked into an absolutely bare cupboard in the same year they made the jump. I don't think any coach would've been successful but he took the lumps for them and got them to a point where they can build.

I would imagine his future is TV/media of some sort. Can't imagine he wants to be an assistant m
The Valley hasn't been relevant since Creighton and Wichita State left. Drake is the perennial power in that conference now. I'm not sure it's a step up from the OVC.

I wonder if Jamie kicks himself for not hiring TJ at that time instead of Prohm. I feel like TJ was always Pollards guy, but something with Leath?

Looking back I’m kind of glad TJ got to cut his teeth elsewhere. He’s here now and Prohm did ok and then crashed and burned quickly. There was no delay in getting rid of him. Thank god he didn’t linger and win enough to keep around.

5 or so years ago I had a conference call with coworkers in Ames meeting with a lady from Murray, Kentucky. To start the meeting, she said “the only knock I have on Ames is they stole our coach, everybody here loves Steve Prohm.” Told her she could have him back and she was shocked he was struggling at Iowa State.

If he did not have an NBA point guard, he could not win games. Just not a very good coach.

Hell of a guy though. I’ve heard nothing but great things about his character and he would fare well in media

Prohm is a great lesson when schools talk about hiring a new coach. Guy had won a lot a Murray State, and seemed like he was ready to move up and take a P5 job. ISU had plenty of talent when he arrived, and while he had some success, once those guys were gone, the downhill slide started. I was one of those that thought he needed his last year, once it started I knew I was wrong. Prohm is one of those coaches that when he has great talent he wins, but without the talent, he doesn't. He doesn't make the players better, the team wins in spite of him, not because of him.

I still can't believe he went 2-25 his last year in Ames. How do you not accidentally win more non-conference games than that?

OMG.

There's no difference between the 10th rated league and the 28th?

The Valley has 13 tournament wins since Wichita left. The OVC? One and that took Ja Morant.

That’s a generous take.

He’s done worse in the non-conference than in the MVC, yet also beats A&M and plays Miss St close. Worse Year 2/3 than one. Beats the top two MVC teams this year

All of which marginalize the notion it’s the step up the the MVC or a bare cupboard that led to this. It is wild performance inconsistency due to Prohm being at the top

The MVC is more difficult and he may have needed to reload some, but he went 3-9 in the non-conference in Year 2. The MVC and previous staff aren’t the issue. Prohm’s ability to run the program is the issue

JFC he can't win in the MVC. It's not the Big 12 ffs. I do think Drake has one of the best young coaches in the country btw. It doesn't surprise me he's having success I just didn't think it would come that fast. He will be leading a big time program real soon
