I mean, Harbaugh didn't miss the NFC Championship until his lame duck season. He may have gotten canned but that franchise is run similar to the Browns. He's about the only one I can think of. It hasn't worked well in the past.
I'd argue that Harbaugh was successful in his transition if you're only talking W/L record. It was his relationship wit the front office that got him run out in SF. Pete Carroll has had a pretty good run in Seattle, although he also probably learned from his first and second failed stints in the NFL before he revived his career at USC.

Beyond that you'd have to go back a ways - Jimmy Johnson from the U to Dallas, and Bill Walsh from Stanford to SF.

But the game is changing, and the NFL is borrowing so much from the college game right now that the leap might not be as daunting as it used to be. So the issue might not be so much Xs and Os as it is manging personalities. Tougher to control the players when several of them make more than you do. It could be done, but you'd want to do what Sean McVay did and bring in some experienced assistants to do a little handholding in the first year or two.

Good points. Harbaugh's personality hurt him a lot more than his coaching. But you can also argue that his NFL playing experience probably helped his transition to being an NFL coach.

Pete Carrol also had previous NFL experience and has been coaching for forever.

I have no doubt that Campbell would be a good coach wherever he would decide to go, but selling that to a fanbase would be tough. And the track record for college coaches going to the NFL is far from stellar.

I don't know that Campbell is an NFL guy. It's hard to figure out exactly what makes NFL coaches really good when talking about transitioning from college to the NFL but I'm not sure Campbell "feels" like those guys. Harbaugh, for instance was no-nonsense, there to win football games and the team would do what it took to do that. Very similar to Belichek and if your only priority isn't winning, then you won't get along with him.

I think you also need to get into good situations where the front office has it's **** together. If the Dolphins have a QB does Saban make it? I bet so.

I don't pretend to know what Campbell thinks regarding the NFL but people need to realize that is guaranteed generational money and a lot of it. Yes, he makes a load here or would in any college gig, but NFL contracts are a different animal and he could always come back to college.

LMFAO!!! As a Pittsburgh Steelers Fan, trust me. No one with any sense should want a job in that organaization. The Browns are the Browns are the Browns.
Give CMC some credit for crying out loud, he's too smart for that.

I'm guessing the Browns get a current NFL assistant coach for next year. I'd be very surprised if they hired a college coach

I wonder if Josh McDaniels would take it? I know he got cold feet with the Colts, but the Browns seem to have a lot of young talent. I could see him entertaining it

I know this goes against every natural instinct in message board posting, but filling your pants on a public forum every time that a major college or pro coaching job is open in the greater Ohio area only hurts CMC staying and the team.

There's a reason he comes out last time rumors started and strongly denied any interest. It's because it harms recruiting when these rumors pop up. The more message boards talk about it the more the Randy Peterson types will feel they need to ask Campbell and write about it. The more that happens the more credence recruits wonder about it.

Do everyone a favor and wait until there is something worth actually talking about before giving a free headline to the DMR for click bate.
After all, according to Herbstreit Campbell is "gone". Remember that before CMC signed an extension? These tweets about short lists and keep an eye ons from journalists are no more informed than my takes on quantum mechanics.

I'm impressed.... as a lifelong Cyclone fan this sure feels different....

Also, I thought that the Mayor would never leave....was picturing an ISU coach K...

Blemish on Hoiberg was you had to wonder how sustainable his recruiting style would be. His playing the transfer market before it was cool was perfect timing.

CMC is going ground up and so far the foundation appears to be strong. It's REALLY hard to trust a coach about staying in today's culture...in a perfect world CMC is a guy who loves the simple life of Iowa and fully appreciates a fanbase that just wants some winning football.

Only front offices I would have much faith in are the Steelers, Packers, and New England. New England chews thru players but you know you are going to get a crack at the championship.
