Hy-Vee is hit and miss, so I think your opinion of it depends on your store of choice. When I was living in DSM, my regular store was the one on Jordan Creek Pkwy, and their Chinese food was excellent. But when I was in Ames, I didn't think the Chinese food was very good at either one of the Hy-Vee stores in town.

I would have to agree. I used to live near there and was always surprised by how good the Chinese food was at that one.

I've never understood the arrogance of people when it comes to a NEIGHBORHOOD. You don't live in Beaverdale, you live in DES MOINES. West Des Moines, Ankeny, etc. are communities.

Best Community to Live In

Beaverdale

I'm with the OP regarding Gusto Pizza. I've tried it twice now and it's just not doing it for me. It tastes undersauced and the crust doesn't agree with me.

How is that arrogant? West Des Moines, Ankeny, etc are cities. I see community as smaller. You might as well say "you don't live in Des Moines, you live in Iowa. You don't live in Iowa, you live in the United States".

You could live in Des Moines, but if you lived South of Grand, in Beaverdale, or in River Bend, your community would be WILDLY different.

How is that arrogant to recognize differences from one part of town to another? I think the fact that Des Moines has a lot of different, unique neighborhoods that all seem to take pride in their neighborhood makes it a great city. There are a lot of places where people don't have that kind of neighborhood pride.

I'll never understand why some people want to homogenize everything. Difference, variety and flavor are what make the world interesting.

True but that's like saying people don't live in Brooklyn they live in NYC. They are distinct area's know by name.

I think it is interesting that Ed Wilson generally wins most years for weather dude and of course, Murphy for sports, but KCCI wins for best newscast. Do people really watch the news on 8 and then switch over to 13 for weather and sports?

The Sports and Rec section is just sad. This area has a lot more to offer, I hope.

Strip pole dance studio, for best place to work out?
Best Kickboxing?
Best Bowling, mini golf?

Really how many people give a crap about the above.

Likewise: best place to gamble? REally?? There are three, so one is always the winner and the other two are runner-up. I'm guessing the gambling places are good advertisers so they keep catagories like this going?

A lot of these I agree with but when you let the people vote, they sometimes are so wrong.

The questionable ones in my mind

Best Local Chinese = Hy-Vee

Best Local Seafood = Waterfront (Splash is better)

Best Local Steakhouse runner up = Texas Roadhouse (yuck)

Best Local Pizza = Gusto. I must be the only person in central Iowa that disagrees but I thought their pizza was just average.

Best Local Place for a $10 Dinner = Hy-Vee

Best Patio = Dos Rios

Best Type of Beer = Bud Light. Peace Tree was the runner up.

Best Local Beer Selection runner up = Hy-Vee

I really like Hy-Vee for grocery shopping and I worked there throughout high school and college but it's on too many of these lists.

Yeah...some of these are embarassing.

That said, I have no problems with Dos Rios as best patio (for a restaurant). Wouldn't be my choice for just going out for drinks on a patio. I'd give that to Mickey's Irish Pub on Court Ave. Should be some new competition next year as I see they are building a huge deck on the All-Play building where Buzzard Billys will be re-opening in March. It comes off the second floor and will be facing the downtown skyline. Should be cool.

Lets remember this isn't a true poll. This is voted on by the readers of Cityview. This isn't necessarily what people in DM actually believe.

As someone who frequents the Waveland for breakfast, I can say that it certainly is not as good as Mullet's breakfast. It just simply isnt. That is not my opinion, that is a fact.

Testifying
My opinions are way different than theirs:

Patio: Mullets
Chinese: Tsing Tsao or Rice Bowl
Pizza: Orlondos
$10 dinner: Tasty Tacos, High Life
Steak: Johnnys Italian

Really, I'll have to check it out. I'm a big fan of the Lumberman...but the staff really set that place apart. Love when weather is really hot or cold and people stand in the doorway.

Waveland has the best Country Fried Steak around and I have tried them all... Since that's all I eat when I go out for breakfast, that puts them ahead in my book...

Hadn't heard/seen about the new patio for the new Buzzard Billy's... their old patio still is the best around, something needs to be done to bring that back

Jethro's weekend breakfast is my favorite, but I don't go out for breakfast much.

I'm a big fan of the Bait Shop patio, astroturf aside. Its a good vibe, and has a great view of the skyline.

I like the Beaverdale bar patios too. Good Son's, Saints and Tally's all have awesome patios.

B@B Grocery store wins again. Good job voters. That place is great.

Love B&B. Manhattan Deli is awesome as well. Both of those are much better places to get a meal for less than $10 than Hy-Vee is.

This. We noticed they had breakfast by chance, one time, and I was shocked at how good it was. Pulled Pork Omelet with a biscuit and hashbrowns. Fantastic.

Try the Breakfast Meatloaf at Mullet's! Very unique and very tasty.

I'm going to have to try Mullet's breakfast sometime.

The Brisket omelet with onions and peppers is great. Getting chili on the hashbrowns is awesome too.
