I am looking at getting a golf membership next year but don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Anyone know of any golf courses near the Des Moines metro that have pretty cheap memberships?

Really depends on what you're looking for as far as experience. Do you care if it's a 9 or 18 hole course? Do you want access to putting/chipping greens and a driving range to practice? Private or Public? How often are you looking to play?

what are you wanting, just golf or the full country club facilities? do you want an 18 hole + or will a 9 hole course do?
Golfing is all I care about. Don't care about a pool or anything. Preferably 18 holes.

Toad Valley in Pleasant Hill is pretty reasonable for an 18 hole course.

Pretty much every city course is around $2k for a membership with a cart. The cheapest in the metro is the 9 hole Sugar Creek in Waukee.

Urbandale Country Club course is nice and they usually run some type of membership special. Problem is that it is only 9 holes.

Woodward Golf Club is a great value . . . 20 miles northwest of Urbandale on Hwy 141, it is a private club, and members can literally walk on and play at any time without a tee time. Reasonably challenging course, pretty, but only 9 holes. Very casual, few amenities, (i.e., no dining room, just a grill and fair prices for alcohol).

Woodland Hills is $17 for 9 on Thursdays, and free cart, after 4:00.

Woodland hills is probably your best bet if you're in Ankeny: it's usually not hard to get a ~$25 18 hole + cart tee-time, and that's with no membership

At one point I think you could do a membership there + otter and copper creek for $30/month, and it would cost $20 to golf w/ a cart, but I don't know if they still do that or not... If you golf a decent amount that would be a decent deal (since otter is usually $50+)

If you like to play a lot of golf, not worrying about how busy it will be when you want to play, then a discount course probably won't be your thing. But if you know that you will play at the same time every time you can probably get priority tee times. The one thing I like about being a member of a little nicer course is that most of the time I can go when I want to go. Barring that there are no tournaments being hosted.
