How could you say Tiller wins it when we put up a grand 0 points up last week. That'll win you ball games. :jimlad:
That had more to do with a terrible game by the WR's and bad blocking than Tiller. He isn't an accurate quarterback by any means and hopefully next year he'll get more help around him.

My biggest concern with Tiller is that the offense does not score much when he starts.

That said, he threw 6 very catchable balls that were flat out dropped. How can you blame him for that? It doesn't matter who throws the ball if no one catches it.

Coach Rhoads said that the QB position is wide open and I believe him. I think he and the other coaches know each of the players physical capabilities but the attribute that they haven't been able to assess completely is the players reaction to high-level game-time stress. I can't say that Arnaud didn't succomb to panic early in his career but I did see him grow throughout the year. Unfortunately with our schedule, we didn't have time to develop the rest of our players the way we would like.

I believe it's wasn't just the QB position we lacked development time. The line and the receivers were, perhaps, more important because the QB has to deal with the situations those players generate in addition to the competition. Against Missouri, the dropped passes, the penalties, and the missed field goals only added to the pressure that Tiller was experiencing which I feel contributed to the last few uncatchable passes.

Overall, I want to think that the coaches want to put all the players into the best situations for their personal development and they don't want to put players into situations with low-probability of success. This year's schedule and injuries prevented normal development. I think that there will be a level playing field for all players this spring and there will be a more controlled environment. Next year's schedule isn't any easier but we will have had some more time for development. I'm looking forward to it.

It should be an interesting competition. Let's not forget that someone named Kurt Warner didn't even get to start a game at UNI until his 5th year! My point is that I hope that all the quarterbacks stick around no matter who is named the starter on day one. Things can change quickly and teams need a quality backup to both keep pushing the starter in practice and be there when his number is called.

Our coaches will play the kids that give us the best chance to win. If someone isn't getting the job done, they will be replaced. We saw that this year with guys like Lattimer and Maggit. It doesn't matter what fans, high school coaches, parents, girlfriends, ticket takers or marching band members think. It all comes down to what the coaches decide.

Look what Lattimer had to do to replace Neal, when he was clearly the more effective player.

I would think that it would be very easy for football coaches, of all coaches, to develop favorites. It's because they see the players in actual situations compared to coaches in other sports. They watch the players do drills, lift, and watch film more than they actually see a lot of them just play.

Football, of all major sports, seems to be the sport where you see effective players get buried because coaches develop favorites. I'm not saying that this is happening at ISU, but the fact that Neal played so much over Lattimer, and the fact that none of our younger receivers even got a chance this year, makes me think that our coaches may like the comfort of playing older guys more than they should.

I have no doubt that this thing will be wide open this spring. Tiller did NOT do enough to lock up the spot by any means. In fact, I think that he injected doubt more than anything. IMO Tiller will go into spring #1, but Capello and Barnett will both get fair shots. And, I guarantee that the competition goes on through summer and two-a-days. Wouldn't surprise me to see Richardson (the true freshman) gets thrown into the mix in fall practice as well. I personally don't think that anything will be decided until after the UNI game.

I'm curious as to who has the final say, Rhoads as far as who offers the least risk perhaps or TH on who has the most upside.

Good luck to James, I know everyone would love for him to shine and lead ISU to the promised land.

In Jerome Tiller's four starts, ISU averaged 8 offensive points. EIGHT!!! That's against a good range of defenses from a top national D to a 1AA D. He's not the answer and anyone who thinks so is freaking crazy IMO.

I agree. It's probably not always easy to make a personnel change when you have so much invested in the other player. I was very frustrated that it took so long for Lattimer to get the starting job, but at least Rhoads didn't wait as long as McCarney did to start Ryan Kock. Ryan had to wait until the final game of his senior season!! I think Kock could have run for 1500 yards that season, and McCarney might have even been able to save his job.

Look at the bright side, IF (and I honestly think it's a big IF considering what we've seen of Tiller thus far) he isn't starting next year, you'll be hearing his name a lot more from the student section and them wanting him to come in. :jimlad:

Either way the QB position is wide open next year, and I want to see the best QB for our offense out there whether it's Tiller, Capello, Richardson or whoever.

no offense, but if Capello is going to be a starting QB in a BCS level team you had better get thicker skin. AA is a homegrown hero and some people on here tore him to shreds and the students even boo him. That said, as always, may the best player at the position be the starter. I trust Rhoads to be fair. But in listening to some Tiller fans you'd think they think Rhoads is playing favorites...which is a joke.

I was impressed with James when he was in this year for limited action. He didn't throw because he was effective at the zone read and scored a touchdown. From what I have seen, all three are great kids. I think James fits the system better than JT, who played well Saturday, and will be rooting for him next spring. May the best man win, and may the others get a fair chance.

This was the first time that i was disaponted at some cyclone fans. I was warned what to say on this forumn but sometimes you just can't shut up!!.One poster said Capello will never see the field, what does he know that we do not? This came from our high school coach who watched all of ISU games this year and was very disapointed that James did not get to throw.he is very blunt, and honest and he said James can play at this level and in this offense,he already did it for four years. But we just want him to get a fair shake this spring if he wins it fine if not fine as long as it is fair. He will work his *** off this summer and hopefully win all the matt drills just like this year.He went andf spoke to PR and asked what he needs to do to win this job, and he said it was a very good talk and honest. He said he wants it so bad and is willing to work for it. So cyclone fans don't dispare we have Q/Bs that can get the job done. You know who i am and i'm anxious to hear your remarks, but don't count someone out just because they were not given the chance to throw in a game yet. I don't believe JC has forgotten everything he has been doing now for the past six years. Thanks for a great year true cyclone fans.

I would suspect that we will see two QBs get good playing time next year. I do not see a clear cut starter right now, but that could change in the spring. Also, how long has it been since an ISU QB took all of the meaningful snaps in a season? 3 or 4 years, or is it more? Our QBs have gotten injured the last few years

Best advice, don't read this crap

Most on this board have literally no clue what they are talking about.

Most on here either didn' t play football or couldn't design a successful play even if they watched one executed over and over again.

These are not good places for family members for those reasons and many more. Remember not to take it personally.

I agree with the others who say family of the players should probably stay off the boards. You're going to have nothing but high blood pressure if you read them. If you get riled up based on what people say about him when he's a backup, it'll be really ugly if he becomes the starter. Fans are harsh - just look at all the threads on Arnaud, and now Tiller.

Just remember no one is saying anything personal.

Some one asked what "mat drills" are. If you go to cyclones.com, click on Cyclone Media Center (or click on any video and will bring up the Media Center). On the left, click on "Highlights". Go to page 11 (right side). Then click on QB Throwing Mechanics Drill. Watch the four QBs throw. Not sure there are enough throws to draw many conclusions, (but two of our QBs throw tight spirals, and two - not so much).

I had no interest in reading this thread beyond the first few posts. Just want to say to Mr. Capello, I'm glad your son's a Cyclone. ISU is a great school and I hope he enjoys his time in Ames half as much as I did. Best of luck to James, may the best man win.

Nothing. He knows nothing, not a darn thing. If he has bona fides, the guy should state them ("I've been to practices"; "the coaches told me"; etc.). He made the comment from thin air, without perspective. Why do human beings do that? So irritating.

My theory is that James did not become known as a commitment until just prior to signing day. Correct? Not much information about James flowed to the fan base. At the time, I watched James' highlights video and became enthused that he was coming to ISU. Loved his arm; loved his scrambling; loved his savvy. The No. 1 rated quarterback in Pennsylvania? And ISU wanted him? You bet.

I'm so darn happy that fans don't have input about who starts and who doesn't. <g> I'm a big fan of JC's because some fans here don't know much about him so jump to unwarranted conclusions, because James has talent, and because from every indication he has a big heart (he's transformed himself in the weight room, you mentioned he wants the job so bad he'll work his rear end off).

I haven't yet watched Jared Barnett's film highlights, so in my mind I haven't given him the attention that I have James (of no importance to anyone but me, of course). JT, JC, JB . . . may the best man win the job fairly.

Matt drills? What are those? Would you mind describing them?

They are basically feet work and the coaches said james won everyone so we are proud of that. Some of the things we saw james do while scrambling were amazing. You have to understand he never had a line. Anyway thanks to all for the kind/encouraging words. He he deserves it thne he earned it.

On the bright side if the QB gig doesn't work out, Kicker might be wide open.
Seriously Mr. Capello you may want to avoid the message boards especially
if he wins the job.
