I am ready to see what the Grill has learned during his GAP year. Hopefully a little refinement. Maybe he can be this decades version of Jeff Hornacek. They have similar builds.

With Kalscheur supposedly planning for 2 years in Ames, it's unlikely Grill will be in a starting role anytime soon. That's ideal for how to best utilize him IMO. Depending on who we still add for next year, I see Grill as a 18-20 min off the bench guy. He'll be a hard worker and team leader for TJ as well.

Caleb getting 32 min a game last year for UNLV should really help his development especially getting time at PG, in TJ's system. Grill was already solid 6'3" and a plus athlete just needed to play and let the game slow down for him. He can fill in at PG/SG/SF where needed next year.
Very nice player to have on the roster and he does have upside of a starter in his range of outcomes.

I think y'all are trying a bit too hard to make Grill more than he currently is. I attribute some of that to the "no-Prohm" bounce that some ascribe.

I see no comparison between the two. Matty Ice was a flat-out shooter with a textbook form who lived & breathed BB and struggled a bit his first two years - I think it was due to adapting to the athletic talent and physical rigors at this level. He obviously figured it out. He worked his butt off. One of my favorite plays was the steal and dunk he had against KU in Hilton - shocked me with the athleticism he showed.

Grill was an outstanding all-around athlete in HS who played BB some of the time. He's obviously focusing full time on BB now, but, even after watching a few UNLV games this year, he looks like a really good athlete who's still getting accustomed to BB. Sure seems to be a hard worker, so I expect he'll contribute, but, while I see a nice shot, I don't see the sweet form of Matty Ice. Would be surprised if Grill is more than an energy guy off the bench who hits a few threes at times - and hopefully a lefty dunk or two. Hope I'm wrong and that he develops to more than that. Either way, glad he's aboard.

I see more of Fred's game in Grill. Not comparing them talent-wise. Just an athlete. A football player's mentality in a basketball player.

Looking at the stats of the transfers and our leftover team, I wouldn’t count Grill out as a starter.

I think Grill will only start if we don’t end up landing a starting quality 3/4

My biggest worry about the roster makeup so far is outside shooting. Going by the projected starting lineups I’ve seen, I’d expect teams to sag off of Hunter, GK, and Foster to start the season. If that’s effective we’re gonna have problems.

We've gotten one transfer I'd consider a Big 12 starter so far. We've lost Bolton. Foster will be ok but he needed reps last season. I think he has a high ceiling though.

Am I happy about the freshman PG coming in? Absolutely. Can a freshman pg will ISU to 7 or 8 conference wins? Most likely not, unless they are off the charts good. Anyone expecting more than 4-5 conference wins is setting themselves up for major disappointment.

He's likely going to just be a role player. You need those types of players that are willing to come in and work. He, Tre, and Jones are 3 guys I'm happy to have because they sound like they know their roles and aren't expecting more than to just work their craft and get better. Not every player needs to be a homerun. You need guys that will bring effort and good attitude that will push themselves to be better. Some players need someone else to push them, these guys all seem like ones that will push themselves. Like Campbell says, it needs to be player driven. I feel we are bringing in guys that will do that similar to bringing in guys like Montgomery, Purdy, and Rose. Just work and the rest will take care of itself.

That’s a valid concern no doubt. I’m not expecting Hunter to be a great shooter, but I hope he’s effective enough where guys don’t actually “sag off” him.

I’m confident that Gabe will be a better shooter than 25%. If he can shoot his career average of 35%, I think I’d be fine with that.

I do think Foster is a good 3 point shooter. I think he honestly could’ve been one of our best shooters % wise last year had he not gotten injured.

Not a home run, but I think in the long run the pros will outweigh the cons. He’s a multi year add, high retention, familiar with school and staff and can shoot, defend and plays with high effort.

To be fair, people were infatuated with Grill the first time around.

To be fair so were Beard, McDermott, Webber along many other P5 Schools once he decommitted from SDSU. He was always a developmental 4 year player who needed time.
I understand if fans are thinking of Caleb's play from his last time in Hilton and don't understand the hype but that isn't the player he is today and could be next year and beyond. I don't think the staff even plan on him being a starter but he has a lot of potential.

Way up there
Unless one of the last two spots is a HM starting caliber wing, Grill is starting next November. I think the lineup will change as the season goes but with the roster right now, I'd say it's

Hunter
Kalscheur
Grill
Hinson
Conditt

I don't have Foster starting yet, he's only played 55 minutes of college ball and he wasn't quite ready to play the 5 in the big 12. I think he's starting by the end of the year but GC starts in the opener.

I’ll be pretty disappointed if that’s our day 1 starting lineup. I also think the next two commitments are huge.

Cheer up, resale value on your tickets went up.
Ah yes the guy who remembers that I complained about resale value of tickets to the games i couldnt attend 2 years ago...I see the basement you live in is still keeping you cozy. And guess what the guy you defended got fired for being a ****** coach, just like i said in my complaint all those years ago.
