UNI sets that trap every time we play against them. Messingham fell for it. Manning didn't. But he probably should have at least tried running a little bit to keep them honest. It's a fine line to walk.
I think people forget that a big storyline heading into that season was that Purdy needed to learn how to protect himself. His Freshman year he played loose and just did his thing. I can only imagine that he was being coached HARD on how to stay in the pocket, how to slide, and focus on being a passer instead of a run-first QB.
You're right that UNI had that gameplan, but I firmly believe that Purdy was heavily instructed to not run.
This time around, I don't think there'll be any such emphasis. Purdy is a senior and won't be told that he can't run.
