I'm actually looking to take my girlfriend's parents out for brunch one of these weekends too and would appreciate any suggestions around the Des Moines metro area.

Thurgood, if you really want to impress the future in-laws, sneak into one of the local hotels/motels that have a free breakfast.

Surprised to hear about Hy-Vee's brunch because the ones in Des Moines are usually really good for only $15. Wait until they get the Market Grille finished (not sure if the East Ames one already has it but the West Ames Hy-Vee is still in progress I know) and give the brunch a try. The Market Grille brunch at the Urbandale Hy-Vee is excellent plus you can pretty much eat from any station they have including the Chinese and Italian plus you can get your desert to go after you stuff yourself.

From what I have heard the interior of the east Hyvee will be remodeled to the new design (I think this year) and the Market Grille, wood fired pizza, chef's grill, etc. will be added then. Have to say the Chinese at the west Hyvee improved dramatically after the renovation there.

I think we will probably try the Iowa Stater breakfast buffet. Other option would be the Cafe or +39, since I know they have good breakfast (just not buffet). Didn't know Jethro's had breakfast buffet, makes me look forward to them coming to Ames even more.

The omelettes and hash browns at Jethro's are amazing.

I think you'll like either the Cafe or +39. They're both really solid options.

Does anyone know of a good place to get brunch on saturdays in Des Moines? I can find plenty of places on Sunday but i dont see a lot of options on saturdays.

Too bad Valentino's has really gone downhill since they bought the place.

Very true.

1. To be fair, this is the first place he's owned himself (though he's had family in the restaurant business, this is the first restaurant that he has ownership and authority in)

2. The previous owners owned the place for 35 years.

I've only been a few times in the 1.5 years he's owned it. I will say my experiences the last two times I've actually gone in to eat have been much better (December and January) than the first few times.

It's an adjustment and would be like expecting Bill Snyder's replacement to continue to make K-State a national powerhouse.
