I don't buy any movies now that my rental fee is only a $1. When I paid $4 to rent I could justify buying a DVD for less than $4 on ebay.

Blu-ray disks are so damn expensive. I won't be buying a Blu-ray player soon either. Just a good upconverting DVD player.

I don't see anyone who might have a collection of DVD's buying a Blu-Ray player unless they have money to waste. I'll agree they look a lot better, but why go out and replace one type of disc that is becoming obsolete with a new type of disc that will become obsolete. Instead I have chosen to upconvert with a player that has a HDMI connection (not all upconvert DVD players are created equal as I found out when first viewing the Pioneer DV-410V and then comparing to my Harman Kardon). Why pay more money to buy a Blu-Ray disc or to rent a Blu-Ray disc when most likely digital downloads will be around the corner? For me and my wife we already own all of our favorite movies on regular DVD and we rent for a $1 from the red box so our goal was to make those movies look and sound as great as possible.

I see what you're saying, but you could have bought a Blu-ray player for what you spent on your upconverting DVD player. And fyi, blu-ray players upconvert. Just saying.. ;)

Also both Netflix and Blockbuster mail-in rentals will do blu-ray now. It's very nice.

I agree that digital streaming for rentals is going to be big, but I'm not sure if they will ever be able to offer blu-ray quality streaming. The bandwidth requirement would be obscene.

If you enjoy watching movies there isn't a comparison to be made between blu-ray and upconverting an SD DVD. Picture quality, sound quality, not even close.

Unless you have a small TV. I wouldn't recommend Blu-Ray or even HD to someone with a 27" TV or non 1080p tv. I have a 1080p projector and a good A/V receiver so there is a big difference for me.

True, I forget about those smaller TV's, I'd agree anything under 32" or so wouldn't get as much benefit from blu-ray.

PS3 here as well. I bought an upconverting Philips after AI bought my Vizio in 2007. Eh it was ok.

I bought the PS3 ($299 only $50 more than just a Blue Ray) this past Christmas (and upgraded to a 52" sony). Awesome.

I put in my copy SD copy of the Godfather last week and I must say the upconvert on the PS3 was pretty darn good.

I may even watch some more of my old titles and not be in such a hurry to replace them with BlueRay versions.
