Have you guys seen the "barcode" scanning in BBM5? I guess this technology is big in Japan but I've never seen it before. The attached picture is of a poster outside a movie theater. Scan it and it will take you to a "secret" website.

Yes, BBM5 is a big upgrade from the last version and I think the possibilities with the barcode scanning are vast. Also much easier to add contacts that way, instead of trying to help them find their pin.

I'm going to get a tattoo of my barcode:wink:

Sounds interesting...but I have a few questions.

Does BBM5 come with a new OS upgrade? Or is it a separate upgrade?

Also, do you have to get it from your wireless carrier? Or do you get it directly from RIM?

I upgraded mine through the App World, and you must have an OS of 4.5 or higher.

I've had BB5 for a few months now. Was lucky enough to get it from crackberry.com before they took it down. I still haven't figured the bar code thing out completely yet. When I go to do it, do you have to click anything or should it automatically do something? So far, I've gotten nothing with this picture.

You have to do it through the "add a contact" part of your BBM, not sure if you are or aren't doing that but it asked me if I wanted to follow the link when I took the picture.

Mine has an option under BlackBerry Groups that says "Scan a Group Barcode". I select that and the camera comes on. I point at the code and the "follow link" thing comes up when it has completed the scan. I didn't have to do anything else.

I held that thing up to the screen for at least a minute and nothing happened. Do i have to click a button to make it work?

I had to use the camera button just like I am taking a picture to bring it into focus, then it scans.

Cell phones in the US are behind other countries when it comes to using them for other purposes. The ability to receive a text message coupon on your cell phone and then scan it at the register is being used in certain markets in the US now. In Japan you don't need keys for your car as your cell phone starts the car. In Europe people can pay for their purchases with their cell phone instead of a debit card.

I literally just downloaded this a few minutes ago from appworld. The upgrade is a whole lot better sans the scanning function so it's definitely worth downloading/installing. I haven't tried the scanning function yet so I'm not sure how well it works, but the concept is pretty bad ***.
