My plan could be somewhat logical. If we play at UNI or Iowa, when do we usually leave for the game?

I could see the coaches/players not being happy about playing a game Friday night and then needing to travel that next day for a game that night again with another one the next day.

It's not far, but still travel.

3 games in 3 days. Alot of teams do this in Hawaii, Vegas, Puerto Rico, Alaska. It's nothing really new.

Usually in those tournaments, ISU would get at least one game against a small-school team, where they should be able to rest some players. Given where ISU is now, it doesn't seem like that would be the case playing UNI, Iowa, or Drake. At least it sure wasn't last year...

One thing to think about is if you can get a tournament exemption for this. Licklitter is concerned about reducing the number of nonconference games. Maybe you can do like the Cyclone challenge where the tournament only counts as one game. I know that you would lose some revenue but the extra game should make up for it.

I do think the tournament would draw a good crowd and at some point one has to stop worrying about the three games in three days thing. It's an excuse that is used when you're affraid a team can't handle it and if we're going to be a legit program, we have to push the team in ways we haven't before.

This year, ISU has JH coming off a broken foot and WJ with a nasty ankle sprain. Do you think it would be good for those guys to have to play 3 games in three days? If everybody is healthy, that's not a problem. But everybody isn't always healthy.

What situation does playing three games in three days prepare the team for? The only one I can think of would be the Big 12 tourney. I don't see a huge learning or preparation experience that would come from this tourney, but I do see enhanced potential for injury.

Just a question to ponder...do you ("you" as in whoever is reading this) support the Big 4Tourney because it's good for the team, or because it's good for you as a fan?

I think it's good for both and one case you made is getting a chance to play 3 in 3 days, much like the Big 12 tournament.

In reality, how well does doing something one time in early December prepare you for something that happens in March? In my opinion, it doesn't prepare you much at all, especially since the teams that ISU is going to have to play to win the Big 12 tourney are likely going to have abilities superior to Drake and UNI.

Why Des Moines? Why not Souix City or Cedar Rapids or the Quad Cities or Council Bluffs? Why does everything @#$%%^(* have to go through DesMoines.. Every governor I have lived through is just the governor of Des Moines.

That is why I don't want a playoff.... I would be for it if all of the games were played at a host school, where one school hosts all three games every 4 years.

EDIT: did i just stumble onto something?

It would be an interesting question to ask G-Mac...I'd venture to guess on that issue alone, the experience in December would do him some good come March.

The non-conference schedule is a great way to prepare for the Big 12, coaches say that all the time. However, much of the non-conference schedule is filled with teams with inferior talent/abilities/coaching than what they'll see in the Big 12. Yet it is still good preparation.

So I do not thing the argument of playing Drake and UNI in a tournament style setting can't help for future tournaments.

Yeah...I'm sure the Iowa State vs. Drake game being played at UNI would be a major draw.

You sell the tickets as a set. If you buy a first round ticket you have to buy a second round ticket. If you team loses, your ticket is no good and your $$ is refunded.

There is no way money gets refunded for tickets.

And, I don't see anyone proposing a true tournament. I see people proposing a round robin type of thing.

Why a Big 4 Tournament?

I'm not a big fan of a tournament. Unless a sponsor is going to pay BIG bucks or the tickets cost BIG bucks, I can't see the financial benefit.

What is wrong with a format similar to this week? All games would be on campus and cram all the contests into a 1 week period. IMO this would cause significant excitement over 7 days.

Monday - Men Hoops
ISU at Drake
Iowa at UNI

Tuesday -Women Hoops
Drake at ISU
UNI at Iowa

Wednesday - Men Hoops
UNI at ISU
Drake at Iowa

Thursday - Women Hoops
ISU at UNI
Iowa at Drake

Friday - Wrestling
ISU v Iowa

Saturday - Men & Women Hoops
ISU v Iowa - day men
ISU v Iowa - night women
UNI v Iowa/ISU - wrestling

Sunday - wrestling
UNI v Iowa/ISU

This is getting brought up again by Lickliter, and honestly I've been for this thing from the beginning. I'd schedule the ISU/Iowa game on Friday Night at 8:00, the UNI Drake game at 6:00, then have Iowa play UNI, and ISU play Drake on Saturday, and then flip flop on Sunday. I think this would be a lot of fun every year.

What are other people's thinking on this?

I thought (i know thats an oxymoron) that Linklitter was talking about a 2 day tournament...Anyway the sticking point is going to be...WHERE THE TOURNEY IS HELD!!....

Myself I would move it around from Des Moines to Cedar Rapids and even Cedar Falls/Waterloo...That way no one team has a built in advantage for long....I thought for a long time that this would be a natural for a holiday tournament..,.

It's all about the money. If that becomes a significant incentive to having a tournament, then it will happen.

Look at Missouri-Kansas. Kansas might regret moving the game, because it would have been their home game this year. Then again, the one million dollars and the BCS bowl appearence that they got even though they lost probably make them sleep ok at night.

If the money is there, it will happen.
