I'm not going to claim Iowa is anywhere near the top of places to live, although I would argue the DSM metro is pretty great place to raise a family. There is a reason it has been popping up on lots of top ten lists over the last 5 years. There are definitely a lot worse places to live. I'm not sure I would want to live anywhere else in the state though.The trends in education and health are a little worrisome to me, but IA still tends to do fine in other metrics.
It's not in the upper tier, but it holds its own. The quality of life here is still fairly good all things considered.
MS and the other deep South states are consistently bottom 5 in almost all facets. The worst places in Iowa don't hold a candle to some of these places in rural MS/AL/WV.
