For any contractors/DIYers:

I just off the phone with my dad (in ft dodge), he got a certified letter from the building inspector that says:

"It appears you have done work....in volation of code blah blah blah...you have to file for a permit in 7 days or the city attorney is coming to get you."

All they did was put in a new tile floor, switched cabinets, and switched toilet fixtures.
Did not add a new bathroom, or add new/reroute plumbing.

Do you really have to apply for permits just to redo a floor or vanity? He's not even really sure how they know they even did anything...

The Dirty Dodgers, out to get someone. Doesn't sound to me like anything he did would require an inspection, but I don't know FD's rules.

It looks like Ft Dodge uses basic home improvements as a city fundraiser. Plus it could be an excuse to get the assessor in to update your dad's assessed value. It should'nt be too hard to clear up with the city but it is a reminder that someone will always turn you in, no matter how nice of a neighbor you are.

So, for example, what constitutes repair of a sink? If you want to put a new set of washers in the faucet, you need a permit??? After all, the faucet is part of the sink.

What do you think is the justification for having permit fees for this? Seems ridiculous.

I guess you could say they need to permit/inspect because that water comes from and goes into the City water system?

wow, that is just plain ridiculous. I have repaired at least half the things on this list. I would be ****** if I had to get a permit to do a 20 minute garbage disposal replacement. Even more ****** that a neighbor would have to be the one to turn you in. Crazy.

There are about 5000 **** hole houses in Fort Dodge that should be higher on the building inspector's priority list.

In Waukee 2-3 years ago they sent some asshat out driving neighborhoods looking for building materials sitting in driveways or inside open garages so they could check on your permits. Apparently they were also witnessed as walking around the house and looking in basement windows. Won't even go in to what I would do if I caught some dipstick looking in my basement windows.

I refinished the basement in my house just like I did in the previous 2 houses and did it all without permits. I looked up the code online and followed it when I did the work but screw them on raising my taxes anymore than they are already.

Not needed in Omaha for the work you have outlined above.

Let this serve as a reminder to everyone:

Reason ∞ to not move to Ft. Dodge.

If you gave the state of Iowa an enema - Fort Dodge would be the point of insertion. With all due respect to those that live there of course.

I think you go through Ottumwa for that. I've never been to Fort Madison or Keokuk, but I hear both or much worse.

Did you know Ottumwa has a nursery at the high school for teen moms? But what's better is that they also have one at the junior high.
