Aauummm, when we were kids there were ZERO nests in Iowa. Now there are 200 breeding pairs in Iowa. Amazing. Even though I see them all of the time here in Minnesota (and on road trips back home to NE Iowa) I still think it's special, probably because I didn't see any as a kid.
I'm loving this nest cam, although it seems to be offline right now. Is anyone else having trouble accessing the site?
The Bald Eagle is truly one of the success stories of the Endangered Species Act ("ESA"). The EPA banned the use of the pesticide DDT in the late 60s or early 70s in large part because it was accumulating in the highest level predators like the Bald Eagle. The DDT weakened the egg shells and chicks just weren't able to hatch. An auxilliary benefit of the DDT ban, is that it protected more than just Bald Eagles, it really helped all predators, particularly fish-eating raptors or other egg layers because DDT was so prevalent in freshwater ecosystems.
It's awesome to see so many Bald Eagles flourishing and their populations recovering from below 1000 wild pairs.
