If he was stealing a million dollars to help his business survive, I am skeptical that they're going to get much of that back, let alone the money they've been paying him to sit on his butt.
Take it from his IPERS balance then. That's a pretty fair and logical means of recouping a decent amount of what he took from the university during his leave while under investigation. The three years of contributions while being investigated would amount to 20% of it and those for sure should be forfeited

This has happened recently at ISU so...
Someone at ISU embezzled a million dollars and then after it was discovered was paid a quarter million dollars over 3 years while on leave? Really?

Not exactly sure.
Except in the basketball program where they only take whites.

Also why did it take them so long to figure out that much money is missing. Don't they have a business school at Iowa?
Sounds like this guy was getting the staff to do his side jobs. So it was just free labor and equipment. The workers probably didn’t know who it was for.

The whole point is not that the embezzlement happened, but rather how the University responded when it was discovered.

There are bad employees at every university. What matters is how the universities respond to them. That's the whole point.

There was no money "allocated" so nothing was missing. It's just that he used taxpayer funded machines, taxpayer funded U of I employees, and his own taxpayer funded time to run his side hustle. Any profit made from that should have gone to U of I.
