With my daughter being in Ames starting this fall I was wondering if anyone had any advice on reputable auto mechanics.

Trickles is great, right on Lincoln Way. BIG ISU supporters too.

I second this. The guys that work at Trickles are great and they have always been more than fair with me. Fast to get me in and out too.

**** Trickle

I only had to take something somewhere once and it was to Midas. I had the part but I just needed it put on and they didn't complain a bit about using the part I had. I had a good experience there I guess.

I've always taken our cars to Dave's Auto on East 2nd St. They are a little pricey because they only use parts with lifetime guarantees, but they always stand behind their work. They have even waved a charge for me once when a reoccurring problem had me in the shop more than once.

Trickles! Darwin and Chris are great guys. They've been servicing our vehicles since we moved back into the area. When we've compared their rates to a dealership, Tickles always wins. And maybe most importantly, they don't give us a line of BS about what is really necessary, unlike the dealerships I've dealt with in the past.

Of course it depends on what might need to be done, but Mark Hansen at Hansen Sinclair (corner of Duff and LincolnWay) has been great to and for us in lot of different situations. He's very friendly, personable and a diehard Cyclone supporter. They do quite a bit of work right at the station and have another location just a couple blocks east and south. All the employees are friendly and ready to help, too.

I'm a single woman who knows nothing about cars (yeah, imagine that!).. I've lived in Ames since the early 90's .. I started taking my car to Midas about 3 yrs ago and haven't gone anywhere else since... They take great care of me, go out of their way to make things as affordable as possible, explain things to me and are just great guys to work with. I appreciate them so much, wish I had them around when I was an 18 yr girl away at college with car trouble!! I work at the university and tell any student that I hear is having car trouble to go there. They are on the north side of Lincolnway .. just west of the Duff intersection.

I second this! Been excellent to work with when I've had car issues. Accelerator cable snapped the day before I left for vacation and they had no issues holding my car indoors while we were gone.

Since I live in Nevada, I've had service done at Big 8 Tyre and Automotive on both of my vehicles, good work, good service and the prices are reasonable. Recently had the sway bar kits, front and back, replaced for $160.00. Original estimate was around $200.00. 'Nuff said.

After putting my 2 children thru ISU over a 9 year period, my advice would be, leave
the cars at home, not really needed or used all that much, except to drive home for
a visit.
