Arrest reported in ISU hit and run death

At 7am they would have been heading for the first stop of the day on that route. 7:06am @ Sunset/Ash. So, technically out of service.
Anybody know how they found out it was CyRide?

Just such a sad deal all around. I really hope he just didn't know that he hit her instead of driving off thinking he'd get away with it.
At 7:04 am you would think the bus was in service. Maybe the driver and passengers chalked it up to hitting a curb while turning...with the rain they reported I think that is plausible. Horrible no matter what the case was.
Some here were discussing this possibility but the criminal experts knew for a fact that it was some drunk/stoned ******* who knew exactly what they had done and just didn't give a **** about another human life.
I was just thinking about this when I was crossing Lincoln Way to get to the game on Monday. Very sad story. Glad that they found him.
Maybe you are right but it's all wild guesses. I'm curious if her injuries are consistent with getting "clipped", broad-sided" or run over. Also, did the bus sustain damage or have other evidence of where it made impact.
For all we know he did, and when he realized it, he lawyered up immediately. Just because this news broke today does not mean the cops didn't know exactly what happened for a long time.
Assuming Blue Route heading towards the stadium after dropping a load off at campus. Chances are it was in service and empty.
I'm wondering about this now. I mean, for the most part, this is a non pivoting semi. These drivers use their side mirrors a lot since there is no center rear view, and you would think they would see something.
Tough situation. I'm sure at some point there will be a graphic that illustrates it and that will be tough as well.
I'm actually pretty sympathetic to those drivers. A lot of them are fellow students, just trying to earn a buck in a relatively monotonous job, like the rest of us.
They've got to worry about...
--regular traffic
--tons of students that don't look/have earbuds in so they don't hear, either (driving through campus is like driving through a major city if rated on the volume of pedestrian traffic alone)
--Iowa weather and road conditions
--looking for people wanting on the bus
--shuttling people on/off
--the awkward/huge proportions of the machine itself
--and do this for hours at a time, without any music or podcasts to listen to like most of us have for long drives or flights
Not simple to balance all that and remain concentrated at the same time.
Tragedy all-around, though, despite all this. I remember the one from 2004 or 2005 when I was a relative newbie at ISU, too.

Agree. The heavy rain at the time would compound the situation.
Driving around campus, it amazes me that more students aren't hit by Cy-Ride.

I'm really sad for everyone involved. As I posted before, the father is a friend of mine and for that reason I wish for the family to have as much closure as knowing what happened can possibly bring.
At the same time, I don't want to rush to judgment on the young person who was driving the bus. By most accounts, the weather was bad and it was nearly pitch black. Driving a vehicle that big it is conceivable you could hit something and not know.

I would assume not, the buses are supposed to be checked and inspected before they go out every day, if not even at driver changes. I would assume there was no dents or anything to indicate something had happened. Whether the driver was aware is a different story though.
As a former CyRide driver, I feel terrible for everyone involved. He may have ran a red light and not realized he hit her. My guess is the bus was turning and she got hit on the side. I'm not sure if anyone has said if she got run over or not but that's my best guess. The buses are bumpy and rock to the side when making a turn or going over a bump, so the driver probably didn't notice anything unusual even if he felt it. Add in the darkness and very heavy rain and it can be very hard to see put of those buses, even if he was looking in his mirrors. The windows always wanted to fog up in rainy conditions.

Wow. Was just thinkning about that girl this morning. Was going west on Lincoln Way and a truck in front of me ran a red light at Ash. As students started to cross.

Someone asked earlier how they figured out it was a cyride. My assumption is they knew it was a cyride route and that one of their very first calls would be to ask the cyride people to check all the buses for damage.
