Walking is the most underrated workout a person can do. Just getting your body moving is critical to overall health.

100% counts.
Especially if you do it shortly after a meal. I often take the dog for a walk after dinner.

I work out MWF in the morning. Technically. I usually head to the gym around 9:30 or 10:00. I'm sure that's not what your asking about.

Retirement has its benefits.

My morning workout includes the following... Get off work at 5 am, watch TV for 45 minutes, order a bacon egg and cheese bagel and a hash brown from McDonald's, pick up food from McDonald's, shove food in my fat face, smoke a cigarette, go to sleep until 2 pm.

Sorry for being a smartass. All that is true, but I do workout after I pick up my son from school.

I try to be at the Y at 5am when they open MWF. For me my warmup is about 1/3 of the work out it takes a while to fire up the central nervous system and get the heart rate up and back down. I don't start measuring what/how I'm doing till after my warm up. If you can do it jumping rope continuously is a great way to fire up everything.

Almost every day at 5. I workout and shower then wake my wife up a little after 6 so she can do the same. I get the 3 kids ready to go as well. We have a 4 month old and the routine worked great before her but it’s been a ***** since.
You should wake up the wife at 5, "workout" together and never have to leave the bedroom.

Bro I don't know how old you are but you won't get that old doing that. Not trying to be mean but you have to get some movement of some sort in your body.

5 am most mornings. Fitness center doesn't open until 7 on weekends but I go 90% of the time on weekends if I'm not biking outside. Stationary bike every other morning and weight machines the other mornings for 30-45 minutes. Spend 15 minutes in the steam room after that. Once the weather warms up more, I'll probably go to all biking outside early morning.

Big lunch time guy here.

I'm surprised nobody has brought up the lunch time crowd. I absolutely love hitting the gym at lunch. I have a primarily desk job so getting out everyday and getting a lift in is the highlight of my day, plus when I get back I have loads of energy so I never get that early afternoon crash. Also, before and after a workout you are so conscious of what you take in for food so it's really easy to eat well when you know you have a workout mid day.

I guess you have to have an employer that lets you leave for an hour but it's been a game changer for me, I feel sick if I miss my workout, just can't concentrate as well. So from my employers perspective its a great thing I leave for a workout mid day.

That said, ain't no way I'll ever be a morning guy. Sounds like torture to me. Lunch time fam...LUNCH TIME!

I don't have long enough for lunch or I would totally do that. This morning thing will have to work for the next few months until we get enough help to move back to my early morning shift and be able to workout at 3:30. Which is when I love it. My lunch has settled, I can be done by 5:00 and have the night to do whatever.

Occasionally I do and it feels great but it's really tough to schedule that extra hour or whatever of waking up.

A super early run or even walk is a great way to start the day.

I recently switched hours at work and now don't get off until around 5:30. I used to get off at 3:30 and get my workout in. Howerver, with the new schedule I don't want to workout that late. So today I did my first morning workout. My muscles were not ready for this. I am 51 years old so it takes me a little bit longer to get going in the morning. Anyone else work out in the morning. Any prep ideas. How do you just wake up and start working out and a cold body?

I pretty much work out only in the AM -- because the afternoon schedule is always too crazy for me.

So my workouts are at 5AM so I can get to work by 7AM.

Yes, your body will adjust to the schedule.

Best advice I can give is to set your alarm early enough to be able to wake up, but not so early that you are tempted to just go back to bed. Power through those first ~10 minutes of your brain telling you to just go back to bed.

Go to bed early enough to make the above less painful. When I stay up late, which I like to do, it makes the morning much less enjoyable. Duh!

And stretch well before starting the workout!

I HATE to work out in the morning. I'd rather work out from 10:30PM to midnight or later - and have done it - than get up before 6AM.
I’m not a morning person but a late workout just wires me. I get the heart pumping and then need to rinse off. I then can’t fall asleep for a couple hours.

Probably a question for another thread, but how many salaried people out here actually take their lunch? In all my time in the corporate world (14 years now good god I'm getting old) I've never really taken a "lunch" unless it's been going somewhere with my team. 98% of the time I work through it.

Question for you and others: what do people do who can’t shower before going back to work?

I want to start getting some walks in during the day. I have a very flexible schedule so leaving for 30-60 minutes for a walk is no big deal.

I suspect in the summer I’ll get sweaty and don’t have access to a shower. Do people just freshen the deodorant and go back to work?
